Cholinergic Drugs

What is acetylcholine? the neurotransmitter responsible for transmission of nerve impulses to effector cells in the parasympathetic nervous system
What is acetylcholinesterase? the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine
What is alzheimer's disease? disease of the brain that is characterized by progressive mental deterioration menifested by confusion, disorientation, and loss of memory ability to concentration
What is cholinergic recptor? a nerve receptor that is stimulated by acetylcholine
What is miosis? the contraction of the pupil
What are muscarinic recptors? cholinergic recptors that are located post synaptically in the effector organs such as smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands supplied by parasympathetic fibers
Whatare nicotine receptors? cholinergic receptors located in the ganglia of both the PNS and the SNS
What are parasympathomimetics? drugs that mimic the parasympathetic nervous system
Cholinergic, cholinergic agonists and parasypathomimetics are all? terms for the class of drugs that stiumlate that PNS
The primary neurotransmitter of the PNS is? acetylcholine
What are the two types of cholinergic receptors? nicotine and muscarinic
A pt is taking the direct acting cholinergic drug bethanechol before meals. after 3 days he calls his health care provider's office and complains of occasional N & V. the nurse should give which instruction? take this med with meals to reduce GI upset
The family of a pt who has recently been diagnosed with alzheimer's diesease is asking about a new med to treat this disease the pt says i'm so excited that there are drugs that can cure this disease, what would the nurse say?
