CNS Stimulants & Related Drugs

What is amphetamines? | The collective term for a class of stimulant drugs that includes the orginally synthesized drug amphetamine sulfate and all of its drug derivatives |
What is analeptics? | CNS stimulant that have generalized effects on the brainstem and spinal cord, which in turn produce an increase in responsiveness to external stimuli and stimulant repiration |
What are anorexiants? | Drugs used to control or supress appetite |
What is ADHD? | syndrome affecting children, adolescents and adults that causes difficulty in maintaining concentration on a given task and hyperactive behavior |
What is cataplexy? | a condition where there are abrupt attacks of muscular weakness and hypotonia triggered by an emotional stimulus such as job, laughter, anger, fear, or suprise |
What is CNS stimulants? | drugs that stimulate specific areas of the brain or spinal cord |
What are ergot alkaloids? | drugs that have been found to narrow or constrict blood vessels in the brain and provide relief of pain for certain migrane headaches |
What is a migraine? | A common type of recurring painful headache that has pulsate or throbbing quality, pain, and photophobia |
What is narcolepsy? | a syndrome characterized by sudden sleep attacks, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and visual or auditory hallucinations at the onset of sleep |
What is serotonin receoptor agonsits? | a new class of CNS stimulants used to treat migraine headaches |
What is sympathomimetic drugs? | CNS stimulant such as nondrenergic drugs whose actions resemble those of the Sympathetic NS |
What is amphetamines? | are they prototypics CNS stimulants used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy |
What is ritalin? | first prescription to treat ADHD and is still used alot |
