Substance Abuse-NOT ON TEST!

What is Addiction? Strong psychologic or physical dependence on a drug or other psychoactive substance
What is Amphetamine? a drug that stimulates the CNS
Wnat is enuresis? Development of tolerance to a substance following prolonged medical use with without psychologic or physical dependence
What is habituation? development of tolerance to a substance following prolonged medical use but without psychologic or physical dependence
What is illicit drug use? the use of a drug or substance in a way that it is not intended to be used to the use of a drug that is not legally approved for human administration
What is intoxication? stimulation, excitement, or stupefaction produced by a chemical substance
What is korsakoff's psychosis? a syndrome or anterograde and retrograde amnesia with confabulation associated with chronic alcohol abuse
What is micturition? urination, desire and frequency
What is narcolepsy? a sleep disorder characterized by sleeping during the day, disrupted nightime sleepness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations
What is opioid analgesics? synthetic pain relieving substance that were derived for the opium poppy
What is physical dependence? a condition by which physiologic reliance on a substance, withdrawl when drug is stoppedd
What is psychoactive properties? drug properties that affect mood, behavior, cognitive processes, and mental status
What is psychologic dependence? a condition where there is a strong desire to obtain and use a substance
What are raves? increasingly popular all night parties involving dancing, drinking, and drugs
What are roofies? pills that are classified as benzodiazepines
What is substance abuse? the use of a mood or behavior altering substance in a meladaptive manner that often compromises health and safety
What is wernicke's encephalopathy? a neurologic disorder characterized by apthy, drowsiness, ataxia, nystagmus, and ophthalmoplegica caused by thiamine
What is withdrawal? a substance specific mental disorder that follows the cessation or reduction in use of a psychoactive substance that has bann taken regularly to induce a state of intoxication
What is acamprosate? a drug used to maintain abstinence from alcohol in pt's who are abstinent when starting the drug and who have additional psychosocial support
What is a new med for smoking? varenicline
A pt. is experiencing withdrawal from opioids. the nurse expects to see which assessment finding most commonly associated with acute opioid withdrawal? Elevated blood presure
During treatment for withdrawl from opioids, the nurse expects which med to be ordered? Clonidine
The nurse is presenting a seminar on substance abuse. which drug is the most commonly used illicit drung in the united states? Marijuana
A pt taking disulfiram as part of an alcohol treatment program accidentally takes a dose of cough syrup that contains a small percentage of alcohol. the nurse expects to see what symptom as a result of acetaldehyde syndrome? Copious vomiting
