What is the size of the gauge and needle for a SUB Q shot? 25-28 gauge and 1/2 to 5/8 needle
What angle would you use for a thin person for SUB Q? 45
What angle would you use for an average or fat person for SUB Q? 90
IM shots. Gauge and needle size? 19-25 gauge and 5/8 to 1.5 needle
What is gauge? determines the size of needle, bigger the #, the smaller the needle
Angle for IM shot? 90
Which injection do you aspirate? IM only!
Intradermal injections. What angle and how many ml? 15 degrees and no more then 1 ml. (.5)
How far do you insert the TB syringe? 1/8 inch with bevel up

giving opthalmic meds, what position do you put the pt in? supine with neck hyperextended
what position for giving otic meds? Lateral. lay 5-10 min. after admin. insert cotton call for 15-20 min.
what position for nasal meds? supine with head tilted back stay 1-5 min.
what position for rectal admin? sims with upper leg flexed insert 3 inches staty for 4 minutes
what are the 3 parts of a syringe? tip, barrel and plunger
what are the 3 types of syringes? standard, insulin and tuberculin
how many mL's can a TB syringe hold? 1 ml
how many mL's can a standard syringe hold? 3 mL
Insulin is measured in what? units
what does an ampule hold? and what kind of needle? single dose of a drug and filter needle
where do you administer Heparin? abdomen, dont massage or aspirate
what is an anticoagulant? prevents blood clots
landmarks for Deltoid? acromion process and axillary fold
how mant ml's for deltoid? 1 ml
landmarks for vastus lateralis? greater trochanter and knee
how many mL's for vastus lateralis? no more than 3 mL
landmarks for ventrogluteal? greater trochanter, index to anterior superios iliac spine and middle finger toward iliac crest
how many mL's for ventrogluteal? no more than 3 mL
why is the z-track technique used? prevent medication from leaking back through the needle track and irritating sub Q tissue
Brand name v.s generic name? generic name not capitalized active ingredients are identical inactive are not FDA
what is a controlled substance? drugs that have limited medical use or high potential for abuse or addiction?
schedule 1 is what? illegal and highest potential for abuse
schedule 5 is what? lowest potential for addiction (limited amts. for narcotics)
what is Teratogenic? agent that interferes with normal embryonic development (alcohol, xrays)
drug action: local? affects targeted area only
drug action: systemic? affects whole body
Drug toxicity drug accumulates in blood b.c it cant be readily metabolized
cumulative effect buildup of a drug
drug tolerance reaction to drug decreases, larger does req'd to achieve desired effect
potentiation enhancement of 1 agent by another so combined effect is greater
incompatibility disharmonious relationship among ingredients of prescriptions or other drug mixtures
noncompliance medications taking med at wrong time or wrong way
lethal dose quantity of an agent that will/may be sufficient to death
