Quiz 7 Bacteria Cont

Gurnick Quiz 7 Bacteria Continued

QuestionAnswer
Normal flora the good bacteria that lives on the surface of the body
Where flora lives for humans in the resp. system the GI track and the urinary track
How does flora protect us creates competition for bad bacteria
what flora is produced in large intestine vitamin K and Biotin
vitamin k coenzyme for clotting factors
biotin coenzyme necessary for normal metabolism
vitamin k factoid babies are born with a sterile gut and no source of vitamin k they are injected with vitamin k within first 15 mins of life
we have a symbiotic relationship with bacteria live in harmony- they do good things for us we give them food and shelter
what is the opposite of a symbiotic relationship host/parasite survives at the expense of the host without benififiting the host
pathogen when a parasite creates harm or a disease
pathogenic microbes germs
pathogens always cause problems when presented in ample amounts, there is a min. number required to cause disease
opportunisitic germs or pathogens a. usually not harmful b. growth controlled by immune system c. normally present as flora
secondary bacterial infection occurs when immune system down, like if you have the flu and dont take care of it, bacteria will go rampant
what affects the incidence of opportunistic bacteria? a. viral flu b. excessive stress/cortisol c. taking immuno-suppresant
Abx Anti-biotics
Do antibiotics kill viruses? NO
Do antibiotics kill bacteria? YES
What are some of the side affects of taking antibiotics? inactivates oral birth control, disturbs flora in the gut
what are the two ways bacteria causes illness infection or intoxication
food born infections caused by ingesting live bacteria
incubation of infection 1-3 weeks
intoxication ingest toxins from bacteria that poison host, only certain species of bacteria produce toxin
Example of intoxication Botulism (botox) causes paralysis
who is most suceptible to lower immunity kids under age of 2 elderly preggo immuno-suppresants
Compromised immunity can cause dehydration and renal failure
Species E. Coli Eschenchia Coli opportunistic
E. Coli food born infection, contamination from animal feces causes diarreah
Staph or Staphlycoccus opportunistic, part of skin flora, produces gut toxins, no taste or smell
Staph can cause skin acne, food poisoning in gut, onset 4-6 hours, causes nausea, vomitting and diarreah
Bacillus Cerrus comes from spores (grain, fruit, veg)
Bacillus Cerrus causes food born infection, nausea and vomitting only
H. Pylori Helicobacteria Pylon
H. Pylori opportunistic, lives in gut, 90% people have it
H. Pylori can cause peptic ulcer, strips protective mucus of stomach wall stress, smoking, drinking, caffiene and blood type O makes worse
PUD peptic ulcer disease
MRSA Methycillin Resistant Staph Aurelos
MRSA resistant to penicillin, only responds to IV antibiotics
MRSA aka Nosocomial infection acquired in hospital by the patient
MRSA causes infections (wounds/bed sores)
What causes MRSA to be penicillin resistance due to the production of the enzyme B-lactominase, deactivates penicillin
Could this be ANY more boring NO
