Spirituality an awareness of one's inner sense of connectedness to a higher being of nature., or to some purpose greater than one's self.
Link between body, mind & spirit beliefs and expectations often have effects on their persons physical and physiological well being. Many of these effects are tied to hormonal and neurological function.
self transcendence is the belief that there is a force outside of and greater than the person. Individuals normally see the force as positive and helps people develop perspectives beyond ordinary physical boundaries. Holding a new born baby is an example.
atheist Do not believe in the existence of God.
Agnostic Believe there is no KNOWN ultimate reality.
Spiritual well being Often described as having two dimensions: The vertical supports the relationship between person and God. The horizontal dimension describes positive relationships and connections people have with others.
Faith Faith is a cultural or institutional religion such as Islam or Christianity. Faith is also a relationship with a divinity, higher power or spirit that incorporates a reasoning faith (believing) and a trusting faith (action).
Religion refers to the system of organized beliefs and worship that a person prat ices to outwardly express spirituality.
Religion and spirituality Religious practices encompass spirituality, but spirituality does not need to include religion.
Hope When a person has the attitude of something to live for and look forward to. Hope is a multi-dimensional concept that provides comfort while people endure life-threatening situations.
Spiritual health balance between values, goals, beliefs and their relationship with themselves and others.
spiritual distress impaired ability to experiece and intergrate meaning and purpose in life through connection with self, others art, music, nature and/ or a power greater than themselves.
Acute illness sudden, unexpected illness that poses both an immediate and a long term threat to a client's life, health, and or well being...creating significant spiritual distress.
Chronic illness and spirituality spirituality helps clients and caregivers adapt to their situation and find meaning and purpose in their situation. Clients report enhanced quality of life as a result of the deeper connection forged with their higher power.
Terminal illness and spirituality Spirituality helps these clients find peace in themselves and their death.
Near death experience often people with a NDE will tell the same story, rising above their bodies and watching care givers initiate lifesaving measures. Most individuals describe passing through a tunnel to a bright light, encountering people that proceeded them in death.
Code of ethics for nursing requires nurses to practice with compassion by accepting the dignity & worth of clients despite socioeconomic status, personal characteristics or type of health problem. It is essential to promote an environment that respects values, customs & beliefs.
Spiritual assessment Once the nurse establishes a trusting relationship with a client and they reach a point of learning together, spiritual caring occurs. Reaching this point is complicated by the limited time a nurse spends with a client.
Life and responsibility spiritual well being includes life & self responsibility. Individuals who accept change in life, make decisions about their life & are able to forgive, have a higher sense of spiritual well being.
connectedness People who are connected to themselves and others, nature and God cope better with stress.
life satisfaction Spiritual well being is tied to a person's satisfaction with life and what he or she has accomplished.
Spirituality and culture Asking clients about their faith and belief system is a good beginning for understanding culture and spirituality in the individual.
Fellowship and community Fellowship is a type of relationship a person has with other people. Question about fellowship and community can lead to information about the client's support network.
Establishing Presence Nurses contribute to a sense of well being and provide hope and recovery when they spend time with their clients. Behaviors that establish presence include giving attention, answering questions, listening, having a positive but realistic attitude.
Mobilizing hope in healing A nurse must mobilize hope in their clients. Hope helps mobilize people to to face challenges in life.
Spirituality Assessment Questions What gives you energy in difficult times? What aspects of your spirituality have been most helpful to you? What aspects of your spirituality would you like to discuss.
Faith fellowship and community Assessment Questions To what or whom do you as a source of strength, hope or faith in difficult times? How does your faith help you cope? Do you use prayer? What gives you life meaning? What can I do to support your faith or religion?
Life and self responsibility Assessment Questions How do you feel about the changes this illness has caused? What accomplishments help you feel satisfied with your life?
Life satisfaction Assessment Questions How happy or satisfied are you with your life? What accomplishments help you feel satisfied with your life?
Connectedness Assessment Questions What feelings do you have when you pray? Who do you feel is the most important person to you?
Vocation Assessment Questions How has your illness affected the way you live your life spirituality, at home, or where you work? In what way has your illness affected your ability to express what is important in life to you?
