| tubal ligation | a form of female sterilization, in which the fallopian tubes are severed and sealed or "pinched shut", in order to prevent fertilization. |
| birth control pills | a birth control method that includes a combination of an estrogen and a progestin. When taken by mouth every day, these pills inhibit female fertility. |
| calendar method | various methods of estimating a woman's likelihood of fertility. based on a record of the length of previous menstrual cycles. may be used to achieve pregnancy or to avoid pregnancy. |
| cervical cap | a form of barrier contraception that fits over the cervix and blocks sperm from entering the uterus through the external orifice of the uterus, called the os. |
| contraceptive patch (Ortho Evra) | a transdermal patch applied to the skin that releases synthetic estrogen and progestin hormones to prevent pregnancy. |
| contraceptive sponge | combines barrier and spermicidal methods to prevent conception. |

| Mifeprex (misepristone/misoprostol [formerly RU-486]) | a synthetic steroid compound used as a pharmaceutical. It is a progesterone receptor antagonist used as an abortifacient in the first two months of pregnancy, and in smaller doses as an emergency contraceptive. |
| NuvaRing | a flexible plastic combined hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring that releases a low dose of a progestin and an estrogen over 3 weeks. |
| plan B (levonorgestrel) | emergency contraceptive pill taken within 3 days of unprotected sex. Either one dose or split in two doses taken 12 hours apart. |
| Seasonale (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) | Extended cycle combined oral contraceptive pills. Packaged to reduce or eliminate the withdrawal bleeding that occurs once every 28 days in traditionally packaged combined oral contraceptive pills. (also called menstrual suppression) |
| vasectomy | a minor surgical procedure wherein the vasa deferentia of a man are severed, and then tied/sealed in a manner which prevents sperm from entering the seminal stream (ejaculate) |
