Physical Activity Bodily movement that is produced by the contraction of muscles to increase energy expenditure; leisure activity
Exercise (or Exercise Training) Planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement performed for fitness
Aerobic Exercise Activity that uses large muscle in repetitive, rhythmic fashion over an extended period; use fat tissue as fuel
Anaerobic Exercise High-intensity, short duration activity; use phosphagens n glucose/glycogen as fuel
Physical Fitness Set of attributes that relate to the ability to perform w/o injury or fatigue
What are the attributes of fitness? Cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness and flexibility
Muscular Fitness The strength and endurance of muscles that allows performance w/ low risk of injury
Flexibility Adequate muscle length and joint mobility; free and painless ROM
People w/ low rates of physical activity Women, low income/education, blacks n hispanics, NE and S states, diability, age 75
Exercise Guidelines for Obesity Low impact aerobic exercise, increase daily act., resistance training; 5-7/week 40-60mins
Exercise Guidelines for Osteoporosis Weight bearing, aerobic, resistance training; 3-5/week 20-30mins
Exercise Guidelines for Arthritis 2-3/week: Muscle strengthening; most days: aerobic exercise and recreational activities
Effects of Moderate Exercise on Immune Function May stimulate immune system, decrease infection
