Fraternal twins REsult from the fertilization of two different ova by two spermatazoa.
Identical twins Develop from a single zygote formed from a single ovum fertilized by a single spermatozoon.
Prolactin Hormone produced by the pituitary gland, and stimulates the mammary glands' secretory cells.
Colostrum The first mammary gland secretion, it is a thin liquid.
Placenta previa The placenta attaches at or near the internal opening of the cervix.
Abruptio placentae The placenta separates from the uterine wall prematurely.
Pregnancy induced hypertension Develops in the latter part of pregnancy, also called preeclampsia. Signs include hypertension, protein in the urine, edema and sudden weight gain.
Eclampsia Untreated, PIH can lead to kidney failure, convulsions and coma during pregnancy, and may result in death of the mother, the fetus or both.
Hydatidiform mole A benign overgrowth of placental tissue which may invade the uterine wall causing it to rupture.
Human chorionic gonadotropin The hormone that stimulates the ovarian corpus luteum, prolonging its life-span 11 or 12 weeks and causing it to sucrete increasing amounts of progesterone and estrogen.
Relaxin A placental hormone that softens the cervix and relaxes the sacral joints and the pubic symphysis to help widen the birth canal.
Human placental lactogen A hormone secreted by the placenta during pregnancy, reaching a peak at term, the normal conclusion of pregnancy and stimulates the growth of the breasts to prepare for lactation.
