1836 Small training school in Kaiserwerth, Germany is opened. Florence Nightingale will eventually receive her education ath this school.
1854-56 Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) named superintendent of the female nursing establishment of the english general hospitals in turkey. placed in charge of nursing care during crimean war.
1859 Notes on Nursing: What it is and what it is not..is published in London. Aurthored by Florence Nightingale it is not intended as a text for nurses.
1861-Dorthea Dix a school teacher, appointed to organize military hospitals and provide medical suppliess to the union army. After the Civil War, she campaigns up and down the eastern seaboard for more humane treatment of the mentally ill.
1861-65 Harriet Tubman Using the "underground railroad," she nurses sick slaves fleeing to the north
1869-Lavina Dock National women's Suffrage Association organized to promote women's right to vote. She was born in harrisburg, pa, uses this as a way to promote the right of nurses in 1890s to 1920. 19th amendment (right of women to vote passed in 1920)
1872 Women's Hospital, Philadelphia, New England Hospital for Women and Children, boston open training schools for nurses.
1873- Linda Richards America's first trained nurse from the New England Hospial for Woman and Children's School of Nursing
1879- Mary Eliza Mahoney America's first African American to graduate from New England's School of Nursing, as a trained nurse
1882-Clara Barton Organizes the American Red Cross
1885 TEXTBOOK OF NURSING FOR THE USE OF TRAINING SCHOOLS, FAMILIES, AND PRIVATE STUDENTS THE FIRST TEXTBOOK WRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN NURSE IS PUBLISHED
1893 THE NIGHTINGALE PLEDE IS WRITTEN AND ADMINISTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME....A RECITAL
1893 LILLIAN WALD AND MARY BREWSTER ESTABLISHED THE HENRY STREET SETTLEMENT IN NEW YORK. THIS IS THE FIRST HOME VISITING NURSING ORGANIZATION IN THE US. LAVINA DOCK WAS ALSO A PARTICIPANT
