What are indications for nasogastric tubes to suction? relieve nausea/vomiting, treat mechanical obstructions, remove fluid & gas, diagnostic studies/obtain specimens, irrigation of stomach/intestine, monitor /treat GI bleeds , admin meds
What is the purpose of the blue pigtail? Used specifically for an air vent to an abdomen
Is the blue pigtail ever plugged? No
When would an anti-reflux valve be placed on the air vent?
The blue pigtail should be kept above_____. Stomach level
How does the blue pigtail stay in place? It gets pinned to the upper part of pt’s gown
When would you irrigate the NG tube? When patency is in doubt
What are signs that patency is in doubt? No bowel sounds, no drainage for 1-2 hours, Pt complains of pain or abdominal distension
Why would you irrigate patients on NG suction? Contents may become thick or reduced in volume and can clog tube (blood clots thick bile, charcoal, mucous shreds, etc)
How often does the NG suction conainer need to be changed? Every 24 hours
