Key defense mechanisms used -- unconscious

| Denial | avoidance of disagreeable reality by ignoring or refusing to recognize it |
| Rationalization | offering a socially acceptable or logical explanation for otherwise unacceptable impulses, feelings, and behaviors |
| Displacement | transferring painful feelings to a neutral object |
| Projection | attributing own thoughts or impulses to another person |
| Compensation | putting forth extra effort to achieve in areas of real or imagined deficiency |
| Reaction formation | displaying overt behavior or attitudes in precisely the opposite direction of unacceptable conscious or unconscious impulses |
| Identification | unconsciously adopting the characteristics of another, generally someone who possesses attributes that are admired or envied |
| Sublimation | directing energy from unacceptable drives into socially acceptable behavior |
| Regression | going back to an early level of emotional development |
| Undoing | a compulsive response negating or reversing a previous unacceptable act |
| Introjection | incorporating the traits of others |
| Isolation | splitting-off response in which person blocks feeling associated with unpleasant experience |
| Splitting | viewing people as all good or all bad, failure to integrate positive and negative qualities |
| Repression | unconscious, involutary forgetting of unacceptable or painful thoughts, impulses, feelings, or actions |
