Nitroglycerine drug class? Anti-anginal, Nitrate
What happens when Nitroglycerine is adminstered? Nitroglycerine decrease myocardial oxygen consumption, which decrease ischemia and relieved pain.
What is the therapeutic action of Nitroglycerine? NItroglycerine, relaxes vascular smooth muscle with a resultant decrease in venous return and decrease in arterial BP, which reduces left ventricular workload and decrease myocardial oxygen consumption.
What does it mean Nitroglycerine vasodilator x 3? Nitroglycerine dilates coronary arteries and peripheral arteries, and dilates veins.
How does Nitroglycerine decrease the preload? Nitroglycerine dilates the veins, causing pooling of blood throughout the body, decreasing the blood return to the heart, and filling pressure (preload) reduced.
Do would you give NItroglycerine to Hypovolemic patient? No, because hypovolemic patient doesn't have enough circulating blood volume, decrease filling pressure can cause significant decrease in CO and BP.
Nitroglycerine sublingual: Acute angina
Nitroglycerine patch, transdermal, topical, sublingual: Prophylaxis of Angina
Nitroglycerine IV: For hospitalized patient with recurring s/sx of ischemia or after revascularization procedure.
Nitroglycerine other uses: Treatment of Raynaud's disease (topical)
NItroglycerine side effects? CNS: Hypotension (major, ask pt. to sit down to avoid fall), HA, flushing, dizziness, DERM: Rash (from ointment), CV: Compensatory tachycardia (severe decrease in BP, may lead to increase in HR).
Nitroglycerine contraindications: Hypotension/Hypovolemia (=<90 systolic), Kidney and Liver problems, ICP, not for HTN, low PCWP, pericarditis, tamponade, and don't give to patient who took Viagra (hypotension)
Patient teaching for Nitroglycerine: 1) Keep meds in dark container. 2) Carry supply at all times. 3) Fresh tablets should cause burning sensation under tongue. 4) Purchase new supply every 4-6 months. 5) Take Nitroglycerine prophylactically to avoid pain: before any activity.
Patient teaching for Nitroglycerine cont: 6) Take Nitroglycerine when feel pain, and stop activity. 7) Take one pill, call 911, take second pill if still feel pain after 3-5 min, take third pill (max, if w/in an hour pain is not relieved, maybe MI.
True or False? It's ok to give Nitroglycerine to someone who took Viagra. No, Viagra can decrease of BP result in hypotension, and Nitroglycerine (vasodilator) major side effect hypotension.
