vital sign terms part 1

temperature | the measurement of the balance between heat lost and heat produced by the body |
pulse | pressure of the blood felt against the wall of an artery as the heart contracts or beats |
rate | number per minute, as with pulse and respiration counts |
rhythm | the reference to regularity; regular or irregular |
volume | The degree of of of a pulse strong or weak |
respiration(s) | the process of taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide by the lungs and air passages |
blood pressure | measurement of the force exerted by the heart against the arterial walls when the heart contracts and relaxes |
apical pulse | pulse taken with a stethoscope and near the apex of the heart |
homeostasis | the state of natural balance within the body |
oral | a temperature that is taken through or within the mouth |
rectal | a temperature that is taken within the anus or the rectum |
axillary | a temperature that is taken in the armpit |
aural | a temperature that is taken within the ear |
hyperthermia | when the body heat exceeds 104 F rectally |
hypothermia | the temperature when the body is below 95 F rectally |
fever | when the body temperature is above 101 F rectally |
pyrexia | fever |
febrile | elevated body temperature |
afebrile | without a fever |
clinical thermometer | a glass thermometer that expand when in contact with heat |
electronic thermometers | registers the temperature on a viewer in a few seconds |
tympanic thermometer | records the temperature inside the ear |
character(respiratory) | the quality of the respiration deep, shallow, low, labored |
dyspnea | difficult or labored breathing |
apnea | absence of respiration usually temporary |
tachypnea | respiratory rate above 25 respiration per minuter |
bradypnea | slow respiratory rate, usually below 10 respiration per minute |
orthopnea | when breathing is difficult except standing and sitting erect |
cheyne-stokes | periods of dyspnea with that of apnea |
rale | bubbling or noisy sound caused by fluid or mucus in the air passages |
wheezing | difficult breathing with a high pitched whistling or sighing sound during expiration |
cyanosis | bluish color of the skin, nail beds, and/or lips due to a low amount of oxygen in the blood stream |
stethoscope | an instrument used for listening to internal sounds |
pulse deficit | the difference between the rate of an apical pulse and the rate of a radial pulse |
arrhythmia | irregular or abnormal rhythm, usually referred to heart rhythm |
sphygmomanometer | instrument that is used for the measurement of blood pressure in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) |
systolic | measurement of blood pressure taken when the heart is contracting and forcing blood into the arteries |
diastolic | the amount of blood pressure that is measured when the heart is at rest |
pulse pressure | the different between the systolic and the diastolic pressure |
hypertension | high blood pressure |
hypotension | low blood pressure |
orthostatic blood pressure | sudden drop in both when person moved from lying to sitting and sitting to standing |
