Geo: 1.1 Vocab

The students must know the difference between relative and absolute location.

QuestionAnswer
A place on the earth. Location
The exact spot on the earth. Often found by using lines of latitude and longitude. Absolute Location
A half of the earth. There are four of them: Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western. Hemispheres
The system of lines of latitude and longitude that criss-cross the globe and make it easier to find different locations. Grid system
The general area a place can be found. Ex. The grocery store is down the street from the school. Relative Location
A community of plants and animals that depend upon one another for survival. Ecosystem
How goods/culture/ideas are transferred across the globe. Movement (Human Movement)
An area united by something specific. Region
A region that is defined by a common characteristic. Ex. The corn belt Formal Region
A region that is created around a central area. Example, the Dallas Metroplex was created due to the popularity of Dallas. Functional Region
A region defined by popular feelings and people's ideas about what that region stands for. Perceptual Region
