CARE/ SURG. PATIENT

QuestionAnswer
Ambulatory (outpatient) enters, has surgery, and discharged on the same day. (biopsy)
Same-Day Admit Patient who enters hospital and has surgery on the same day. Stay afterwards for care. (hysterectomy)
Inpatient Patient who is admitted into the hospital, undergoes surgery, and remains in hospital. (open heart surgery)
Major surgery Extensive reconstruction or alteration of body parts. (Coronary bypass, gastric resection)
Minor Involves minimal alteration in body parts. (cataracts, tooth extraction)
Elective Not necessary, patient's choice
Urgent Necessary for patient's health
Emergency Must be done immediately to save a person's life or preserve function.
Diagnostic Confirm Dx
Ablation Excision or removal of body part. Removal of growth or harmful substance.
Palliative Relieves or reduces intensity of disease symptoms.
Reconstructive Restores function or appearance to traumatized or malfunctioning tissue.
Transplant Replacement of malfunctioning organs
Constructive restore function lost or reduced as result of congenital abnormalities.
Pre-operative Before surgery
Intra-operative During surgery
Post-operative After surgery
Age Young and old patients metabolic needs may not respond as quickly to physiological changes
Carbs and fat energy producers
protein build and repair
TENS unit provides electrical impulses to nerve endings and blocks transmission of pain signals
