CIT - Cells

Cells revision

QuestionAnswer
Chemical reactions underlie all body processes, what are they? 1. Movement 2. Digestion 3. Contraction (cardiac)
Cells are building blocks for all living things. What are the 4 main elements of a cell? 1. Oxygen 2. Carbon 3. Nitrogen 4. Hydrogen
Cells contain approx what % of water? 60%
What is intracellular fluid? a soloution containing small amounts of gases, nutrients and salts dissolved in water.
What is interstitial fluid? Fluid that surrounds the exterior of a cell and the site of exchange between blood and cells.
Name 3 functions common to all cells. 1. Digest foods 2. Excrete waste products 3. Respond to stimuli
Name the 3 main parts of a cell. 1. Nucleus 2. Cytoplasm 3. Plasma Membrane
What is a plasma membrane? The transparent outer layer of a cell.
Plasma Membrane .transparent outer layer of a cell. .enzymes .receptor sites for hormones .transports proteins that allow the membrane to be semi permeable
Permeability property of membranes that allow the passing of molecules or ions
Selective permeability .barrier that allows some substances to pass through while excluding others.
Passive transport .substances are transported across a membrane without the aid of energy. .Diffusion .Filtration
Diffusion .Molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration along a concentration gradient. .molecules tend to scatter themselves throughout the available space. .diffusion occurs if the molecules are small enough and fat soluble.
Filtration .movement of water and solutes through a membrane by hydrostatic pressure (pressure is exerted by blood). .Filtration is used by the kidneys to form urine. .blood cells and protein too large are held back.
Osmosis movement of water through a selectively permaeable membrane along its concentration gradient.
Active transport occurs when the substance: .is too big to pass through the pores .is fat in-soluble .is travelling against a concentration gradient
Acid is a substance that can release hydrogen ions.
Ph describes the acid base concentration
Which organs regulate blood ph? lungs and kidneys
Blood scale is... 7.35-7.45
True or false.....Living cells are sensitive to acid/base changes.... True
Proteins accound for over ----% of organic matter in the body? 50%
Name 4 functions of proteins in the body. 1.Antibodies 2.Hormones 3.Transport proteins 4.Enzymes
Antibodies specialised proteins that bind with and inactivate bacteria, toxins and some viruses
Hormones help regulate growth and development
Transport proteins carry's substances like medications and oxygen
Enzymes makes chemical reactions work better.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
