ACNE PREPARATIONS - nursing implication wash thoroughly before applying. AVOID eyes in the mucus membrane.

ANTI-PSORIATICS prevents or relieves psoriasis
psoriasis chronic skin disorder. Etiology is unknown. Red, scaly patches with silvery scales
ANTI-PSORIATICS - drug - methotrexate Amethopterin (for severe psoriasis!)
ANTI-PSORIATICS - use interferes with folic acid metabolism, inhibits DNA synthesis & cell reproduction
ANTI-PSORIATICS - side effect - minor dizziness, drowsiness, h/a blurred vision
ANTI-PSORIATICS - side effect - major pulmonary fibrosis, hepatotoxicity, N&V bone marrow suppression, nephropathy
ANTI-PSORIATICS - drug - other Donovox (calcipotriene), baths (colloidal baths)
ANTISEBORRHEICS counteracts or effectively treats seborrhea
seborrhea disease of sebaceous glands with increased amt of fat, secretes red, yellow, white scaly crusted patches. Usually moist, greasy and itchy. SYMPTOMS: worse on cold months!
ANTISEBORRHEICS - drug - sulfacetamide sodium (Rx lotion) sebicon (use on scalp!)
ANTISEBORRHEICS - action bacteriostatic effect by interfering with bacterial use of PABA & inhibits folic acid biosynthesis needed for bacterial growth
ANTISEBORRHEICS - side effect - minor temp burning/stinging sensation
ANTISEBORRHEICS - side effect - major hypersensitivity (erythema, rash, pruritis)
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) hormones from cortex of the adrenal gland or they are prepared synthetically & they are used to relieve inflammation of skin
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) FYI never use topical steroid on skin when there is a known infection on the body (skin)!
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) medications come in: "low-mid-high potency" based on the particular steroid, conc, vehicle. Lotions, creams, gels & ointments are more potent due to increased absorption from these vehicle
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) -drug - triamcinolone acetate 0.025% Kenalog (low potency - good for long term treatments)
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) -drug - fluocinolone acetonide 0.025% Synalar (mid potency)
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) -drug - betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% Diprolene (high potency)
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) - FYI never use Fluorinated steroid on the face!
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) - use to relieve inflammatory manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dematoses (psoriasis-dermatitis-eczema-insect bite reactions, 1st & 2nd degree sunburn)
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) - action exert localized anti-inflam. Reduce itching, redness, swelling
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) - side effect - minor skin irritation, burning, redness, swelling, itching
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Topical corticosteroids) - nursing implications avoid cosmetics or bandages over site depending on the order - skin is washed w soap & water & applied to moist skin
BURN PREPARATIONS reduce bacterial growth
BURN PREPARATIONS - drug - mafenide acetate Sulfamylon (goes through eschar)
BURN PREPARATIONS - drug - silver sulfadiazene silvadene (cream used to treat 2nd & 3rd degree burn to prevent infection
BURN PREPARATIONS - use adjunctive therapy in 2nd & 3rd degree burtns for Tx & prevention of infection and possible sepsis
BURN PREPARATIONS - action bacteriostatic against many organisms (ie Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
BURN PREPARATIONS - side effect - minor Ay rxn is Important
BURN PREPARATIONS - side effect - major intense pain, burning, rash, blisters, bleeding facial edema, etc
SCABICIDES used to treat scabies

SCABICIDES - drug - permethrin 5% (cream) Elimite (Rx only)
SCABICIDES - action scabicidal & anti pruretic
SCABICIDES - side effect - minor feeling of warmth, slight skin irritation
SCABICIDES - side effect - major tingling, numbness
SCABICIDES - nursing implication pt should shower 1st, then w gloved hands massage into dry skin from head to soles of feet. Remove in 8-14 hrs by showering. If living mites after 14 d repeat process. Clothing & bed linen: wash separately in hot water twice.
PEDICULICIDES used to kill lice
PEDICULICIDES - drug - permethrin 1% NIX (OTC cream rinse)
PEDICULICIDES - action causes paralysis of pest & inability to obtain burro into skin to obtain blood supply
PEDICULICIDES - side effect - minor transient tingling & pruritis
PEDICULICIDES - side effect - major burning, stinging, numbness, rash, edema
PEDICULICIDES - nursing implication scalp as well as hair should be saturated w lotion. Leave in place for 10 mins. When hair is dry use fine tooth comb to remove dead lice.
CAUTERIZING AGENTS used to destroy tissue. Do it with caustic cauterizing effect
CAUTERIZING AGENTS - drug - dichloroacetic acid Bichloracetic Acid
CAUTERIZING AGENTS - uses removal of warts
CAUTERIZING AGENTS - action acids exert a keratolytic action which removes epidermal cells infected by viruses.

SUNSCREENS - UVB can cause unprotected skin to burn & thought to be the primary cause of skin cancer
SUNSCREENS - FYI choose a sunscreen w at least SPF of 15. apply 15 mins prior to exposure. Re-apply after swimming, excercising or perspiring

THERAPEUTIC BATHS - drug - colloidal oatmeal bath Aveeno
THERAPEUTIC BATHS - use to treat irritated skin, pruritis (chicken pox, poison ivy, etc)
