Region | an area of the Earth sharing a common characteristic |
Physical regions | a type of region created because of a common characteristic that can be seen on the surface of the Earth. (ex: Desert, Great Plains, Low Countries) |
Cultural regions | a type of region created because of a common characteristic of the people living there. (language spoken, religion practiced, products made) |
Regional landscape | the things in a region either created by nature or by people (ex: rivers, dams, buildings) |
Rivers impact on region | affects political boundaries, transportation, economic activity, power generation. |
Mountains impact on region | affect precipitation ( a rainy side and an arid side) and transportation |
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) | a computer system used by geologists to create and store map making information. |
Perspective impacts map making | A map reflects the view point of the map maker. Maps made in Europe and America put the Atlantic at the center. Maps made in Asia put the Pacific at the center. |
Changes to maps | Maps change over time as more data becomes available, political boundaries/names change, physical features change |
