Erosion Gradual wearing away of sand, soil, or rock by wind or water
Deposition Gradual building up of eroded material in a new location
Earthquake A shifting of the plates that make up Earth's surface.
Flooding Overflow of water that covers typically dry land.
Volcanic Eruptions Lava, ash, gas, and rock coming up through the Earth's crust
Aral Sea Once the 4th largest body of fresh water, now nearly gone due to farmers diverting water for irrigation.
Dams Built to control flooding and generate hydroelectric power by controlling when and how much water goes down river.
Colorado River A series of dams, reservoirs, and water storage to control and supply water to the Western U.S.
Canals A man-made waterway used for transportation
Reservoirs A man-made lake built to store water for irrigation or drinking.
Irrigation Diverting water from its natural course to farmland to help grow crops
Agricultural terracing Turning a hill into a series of flat shelves to make farming easier
Polders An area of low-lying land reclaimed from the sea or a river and protected by dikes. Most associated with the Netherlands
Deforestation Removing the trees and other vegetation from an area
Desertification Fertile land turning into desert. Typically the result of human caused droughts, deforestation, or poor agricultural practices
Acid Rain Precipitation that is altered from normal due to human pollution. Can be dangerous to plants and animals.
Pollution Introduction of non-natural chemicals to the environment by humans
Climate change A potential change in the world climate due to human pollution and environmental decisions.
