Hypotension Abnormally low blood pressure, measuring below 100/60 or lower
Enema Specific amount of water, with or without an additive, which is introduced into the colon to stimulate the elimination of a stool
Axillary Relating to the armpit
Fecal impaction A solid immobile bulk that can develop in the rectum as a result of chronic constipation
Hypertension High blood pressure, measuring 130/80 or higher
Flatus Gas in or from the stomach or intestines, produced by swallowing air or by the bacteria's fermentation
Electric thermometer An electric instrument for determining temeratures
Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) Chronic condition in which the liquid contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus. This can result in inflammation and damage the lining of the esophagus
Aspiration Inhalation of food, fluid, or foreign materials in the lungs
Hemorroids Swollen vein or group of veins in the regions of the anus
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)Intended to provide comprehensive information about a substance or mixture for use in workplace chemical management
Ileostomy Surgical operation in which a piece of the ilium is diverted to an artificial opening in the abdominal wall
Subjective Information that a person cannot or did not observe, but is based on something reported to the person that may or may not be true
Ostomy bag Prosthetic medical device that provides a means for the collection of waste from a surgically diverted biological system (colon, ilium, bladder) and the creation of a stoma
Verbal communication Communication involving the use of spoken or written words/sounds
Peptic ulcers Lesion in the lining (mucosa) of the digestive tract. Typically in the stomach or the duodenum caused by the digestive action of pepsin and stomach acid
Burns An injury caused by exposure to heat/flame
Reflux term used when liquid backs up into the esophagus from the stomach
Ear canal Tube running from the outer ear to the middle ear
Stoma Artificial opening in the body from which waster can be eliminated
Nonpathogens Microorganisms incapable of causing disease
Diversity Inevitable variety of customs, attitudes, practices, and behavior that exists among groups of people from different ethnic, racial, or traditional backgrounds who come into contact.
Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Infection aquired within a healthcare setting during the delivery of medical care
Living will Document that outlines the medical care a person wants, or des not want, incase he/she becomes unable to make those decisions
Blood Borne Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans
Holistic care Type of care that involves caring for the whole person (mind as well as body)
Person-Directed care Type of care that places the emphasis on the person needing care and his/her individuality and capabilities
Belonging Being a member / a part of (a particular group organization, class)
Liability Legal term that means someone can be held responsible for harming someone else
Culturally Sensitive Care Care that is given while being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value - positive/negative, better/worse, right/wrong
Speech Language Pathologist Speech Therapist Training to help people with speech and language problems to speak more clearly
Mottling Irregular arrangement of spots or patterns of color
Ombudsman Legal advocate for residents in long-term care facilities Help resolve disputes and settle conflicts
Sexual orientation Person's sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted to
Trapeze Triangular device suspended over a bed to allow the resident to pull his upper body up

Validating Technique used for interacting with people with dementia in which the caregiver acknowledges the person's reality rather than correcting the person
Vagina Muscular tuber leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women
Urination Discharge of urine from the body
Urinary Meatus Opening or meatus of the urethra The point where urine exits the urethra in males and females, and also where semen exits the urethra in males
Urinalysis Examination of the urine under a microscope and by chemical means
Urinal Collection device used for urination when a male is unable to get out the bed
Triggers Something that sets off a memory tape or flashback transporting the person back to the event of their original trauma
Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) Intravenous infusion of nutrients administered directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system
Toe Tuck (Pleat)Top pleat made at the end of the bed over the toes as a last step of making an occupied bed, allow toes to move freely
Suprapubic catheter Surgically created connection between the urinary bladder and the skin used the drain urine from the bladder in individuals with obstruction of normal urinary flow
Supportive Devices Devices used when positioning a person to help the person maintain proper body alignment, such as rolled sheets, towels, or blackces. Devices that help stabilize a weak joint or limb
Ability The means or skill t be able to do something
Abduction Moving body part away from the body, from the midline of the body
Sterile Free from bacteria or other living microorganisms; totally clean
Intellectual Disability A disability characterized by significant limitations n both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior which overs many everyday social and practical skills
24 Hour Urine Collection Urine specimen consisting of all urine voided in a 24 hours period
Walker Frame used by disabled or infirm people for support while walking, typically made of metal tubing with small wheels or rubber tipped feet
Urinary Incontinence Inability to hold urine in the bladder due to loss of voluntary control over the urinary sphincters resulting in the involuntary passage of urine
Delegation Act or process of delegating or being delegated
Mania Mental illness marked by periods of great excitement, euphoria, delusions, and overactivity
Values A persons principles or standards of behavior, one's judgement of what is important in life
Battery intentional touching of a person without their consent
Spiritual Relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)Virus that attacks the immune system, body's natural defense system
Faith Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof
Contamination Action of state of making or being made impure by polluting or poisoning
Hospice Holistic care, compassionate care given to dying people and their families
Infection State resulting from pathogens invading the body and mulitplying
Autism Mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concept
Hepatitis Inflammation of the liver caused by certain viruses and other factors such as alcohol abuse, some medications, and trauma
Anxiety Uneasiness or fear often about a situation or condition
Virus Pathogen which can grow and reproduce only after infecting a host cell
Palliative Care Care that focuses on the comfort and dignity of the person rather than curing them
Hand hygiene Washing hands with either pain or antiseptic soap and water and using alcohol based hand rubs
Spiritual needs Includes the needs of accommodations of cultural, religious, spiritual and personal values as well as religious and their spiritual practices
Pathogen Microorganisms that is capable of causing infection and disease
Down syndrome congenital disorder arising from a chromosome defect, causing intellectual impairment and physicals abnormalities including short and stature and a broad facial profile
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) equipment tat helps protect employees from serious work place injuries/illnesses resulting from contact with workplace hazards
Empathy Identifying with the feelings of others
Cross contamination Process by which bacteria or other microorganisms are unintentionally transferred from one substance to another with harmful effect

Norma flora Bacteria which are found in or on our bodies on a semi-permanent basis without causing disease
culture System of learned behaviors, practiced by a group of people that is considered to the be tradition of the people and is passed on from one generation to the next

Documentation Creation of a digital or analog record detailing a medical treatment, medical trial or clinical test
Cheyne Stokes Alternating periods of slow, irregular breathing and rapid, shallow breathing
Bacteria One celled organism including some that can cause disease
Advanced Directive Legal documents that allow people to choose what medical care they wish to have if they are unable to make these decision themselves
Terminally ill/Terminal Illness disease of condition that will eventually lead to death
Do Not Resuscitate type of advanced directive that instructs medical professional not to perform CPR if a person's heart beat or breathing stops
C-Diff Clostridioides difficile : Spore forming bacterium which can be part of the normal intestinal flora
Chain of Infection Way of describing how disease is transmitted from one being to another
Bias Prejudice in favor/against one thing, person, group compared with another. Usually in a way considered to be unfair
Infection prevention Set of methods practiced in healthcare facilities to prevent and control the spread of disease
Dignity State or quality of being worthy of honor or respect
Biohazardous Risk to human health or the environment arising from biological work, especially with microorganisms
Customs Group pattern of habitual activity usually transmitted from one generation to another
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensed nurse who has completed 1-2 years of educational; givers treatments and supervised daily care of residents
Clergy body of all people ordained for religious duties, especially in the Christian church
Ethics Knowledge of right and wrong
Cerebral Palsy condition marked by impaired muscle coordination (spastic paralysis) and/or other disabilities, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth
Home health care that is provided in a person's home
Bipolar disorder A type of depression that causes a person to swing from periods of deep depression to periods of extreme activity; also called manic-depressive illness.
Abandonment The action of abandoning a helpless senior; this can be illegal.
Rigor Mortis Stiffening of the joints and muscles of a body a few hours after death, usually lasting from one to four days.
Disinfectants A chemical liquid that destroys bacteria
Life Support Systems An artificial or natural system that provides all or some of the items (such as oxygen, food, water, control of temperature, and pressure, disposition, of carbon dioxide and body wastes) necessary for maintaining life or health.
Asepsis The process of removing pathogens, or the state of being free of pathogens.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder A mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event - either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
