Cerebral Stimulants: Ritalin (methylphenidate); Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine) increase alertness, attention and energy by raising key chemicals in brain and other parts of body; give early in day to make sure doesn't interfere with sleep; may cause excitement, dizziness, dry mouth, restlessness, palpitations, increased pulse and BP
Depressants (Narcotic Analgesics): Duramorph, MS Contin, Roxanol, Morphine (morphine sulfate); Demerol (meperidine); Roxicodone (oxycodone); Percocet (acetaminophen/oxycodone) Norco, Lortab, Vicodin (hydrocodone) attach to receptors in brain to block pain, slow breathing; relieves pain; may cause constipation, nausea, vomiting, confusion, respiratory distress, decreased BP, diaphoresis, drowsiness; monitor for constipation; notify nurse if RR <12 prior
Non-narcotic Analgesics/Anti-pyretics: ASA; Tylenol relieve pain and reduce fever; may cause dizziness, confusion, nausea, skin rash; give with food; may raise BP
Sedatives/Hypnotics: Ambien; flurazepam increase inhibition of nerve cell excitability; reduce physical and mental activity, control seizures, produce relaxation and sleep; may cause rash, nausea, drowsiness
Anti-convulsants: Dilantin (phenytoin); Tegretol (carbamazepine); Depakene (valproic acid); Depakote (divalproex); Neurontin (gabapentin); Valium (diazepam) depress abnormal electrical discharges in brain; stop or prevent seizure activity; may cause swelling and redness of gums, drowsiness, dizziness, tremors, confusion; observe gums; encourage oral hygiene
Anti-Parkinson Drugs: Sinemet (levodopa and carbidopa); Cogentin; Requip (ropinirole); Ropinirole; Mirapex restores balance between dopamine and acetylcholine (necessary for proper motor functioning); treat EPS, tremors, muscle weakness; treat RLS; encourage fluids; give with food; may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, GI upset
