Respiratory Meds

QMA

TermDefinition
Respiratory Stimulants triggers respiratory center of the brain, increasing rate and depth of respiration; may irritate lining of the nose and cause nausea
Antitussives: Codeine (controlled substance) combined with an expectorant suppresses the cough by depressing the activity of the cough center in the brain; may cause vomiting, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, nervousness, restlessness; should not receive fluids for 15 minutes after taking syrup
Expectorants: Robitussin, Mucinex (guaifenesin) thins and loosens mucous, breaking up congestion; may cause gastric irritation, nausea, vomiting; take with water
Bronchodilators: Proventil, Ventolin (albuterol); fluticasone relax bronchial muscles to open breathing passages; may cause restlessness, dizziness, palpitations, nausea, hypertension, anxiety
Allergy Medications: Claritin; Flonase (fluticasone); Allegra; Zyrtec synthetic steroids that block inflammatory allergens; may cause headache, sore throat, nausea, sinus pressure, nasal dryness, hypersensitivity
Antihistamines: Benadryl (diphenhydramine); Phenergan (promethazine); Dimetapp (brompheniramine); Claritin; Zyrtec combat effects of histamine, which is released by body during allergic reaction; may cause drowsiness, dizziness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, urinary retention; encourage fluids
Decongestants: Vicks shrinks mucous membranes and relieves nasal swelling and congestion; prolonged use can cause irritation, perforated nasal septum, rebound nasal congestion; can develop tolerance
Combination products: Sinutab (acetaminophen/chlorpheniramine/pseudoephedrine); Actifed (pseudoephedrine/triprolidine) preparations containing more than one product to produce more than one effect; treat coughs and allergies; may cause drowsiness and dry mouth; may elevate BP
Tuberculin Medications: Rifadin (rifampin) reduce growth or kill the bacteria that cause TB; may cause fatigue, drowsiness, numbness in extremities, nausea, confusion, headache, anorexia, rash; monitor for signs of hepatitis and weight loss
