Anti-inflammatory Steroids: Decadron (dexamethason); Medrol (methylprednisolone); prednisone; hydrocortisone decreases inflammation; used to treat arthritis, dermatitis, chronic respiratory conditions; may cause weight gain, increased blood sugars; masks symptoms of infection; observe for signs of infection; monitor change in urine/blood glucose
Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Indocin (indomethacin); Motrin, Advil, Nuprin (ibuprofen); naproxen; Voltaren (diclofenac) block substances that promote inflammation; used to treat arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, gout; may cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, GI bleeding, dizziness; tolerated better with food
Anti-gout: allopurinol; Aldactone reduces ability of uric acid crystals to inflame lining of joints; may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, rash; encourage fluids; take with food or after meals
Muscle Relaxants: Robaxin (methocarbamol); Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine); Soma (carisoprodol); Valium (diazepam); baclofen works on CNS to relax muscle tissue and relieve pain; may cause drowsiness, light-headedness, dizziness
Analgesics: Tylenol (acetaminophen); Demerol (meperidine); Duramorph, MS Contin, Roxanol (morphine) alter perception of pain; may cause ulcer, dizziness, headache, sedation, constipation, rashes, respiratory depression, tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, increased bleeding tendencies; may be addictive
Osteoporosis Medications (Bisphosphonates) prevent loss of bone density
Osteoporosis Medication (Monoclonal Antibodies) prevents specific cells from breaking down bone
Anti-rheumatics reduces further joint damage in severe RA
