plains | large areas of flat or gently rolling land |
coastal plains | areas of flat land along the coast |
weather | the day-to-day changes in the air |
climate | the type of weather a place has over a long period of time |
precipitation | water that falls to the ground as rain, sleet, or snow |
latitude lines | east-west circles around the globe |
equator | main latitude line, its measurement is zero degrees |
longitude lines | lines which run from the North Pole to the South Pole |
Prime Meridian | main line of longitude, its measurement is zero degrees |
globe | a model of earth |
projection | a method of putting earth's surface on a flat piece of paper |
distortion | any change or inaccuracy in the shapes and sizes of places on a map |
map key | explains what the symbols on a map mean |
scale | used to show distance on a map |
compass rose | shows the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, west |
arid | dry |
humid | air that has lots of moisture |
monsoons | heavy wind and rain storms |
island | land that is completely surrounded by water |
scarce | not much available |
irrigation | to bring water to crops |
desert | an area of dry land |
standard of living | the quality of life of a group of people |
life expectancy | the average number of years a person can expect to live |
natural resource | something found in nature that is useful to people |
rural area | the coutryside |
urban area | a city |
station | a large sheep or cattle ranch in Australia |
Aborigine | the first people of Australia |
marsupial | an animal that carries its baby in a body pouch |
import | a product that is brought into a country |
export | a product that is shipped out of a country |
