What is compensation? Covering up a real or perceived weakness by emphasizing a train one considers more desirable; Lacking in one area and making it up by excelling in another area
What is an example of compensation? A teenage boy with cerebral palsy is unable to participate in football, so he compensates by becoming a great student.
What is rationalization? Attempting to make excuses or formulate logical reasons to justify unacceptable feelings or behaviors; Attempting to justify unhealthy actions/feelings by creating an acceptable excuse.
What is an example of rationalization? A patient tells the rehab nurse, "I drink because it's the only way I can deal with my bad marriage and horrible job"
What is denial? Refusing to acknowledge the existence of a real situation or the feelings associated with it; not accepting reality of a situation cause ur delulu
What is an example of denial? Telling yourself that Johnny is now in love with you because of the way he looked into your eyes when he picked up your pencil when you dropped it, when in reality he does not like you at all.
What is reaction formation? Preventing unacceptable or undesirable thoughts or behaviors from being expressed by exaggerating opposite thoughts or types of behaviors; saying/doing things that do not correlate to how you ACTUALLY feel.
What is an example of reaction formation? A person who applauds with enthusiasm when their competitor wins an award.
What is displacement? The transfer of feelings from one target to another that is considered less threatening or that is neutral; Projecting negative thoughts/emotions to someone/something that was not involved in the upsetting situation.
What is an example of displacement? A patient is angry with his doctor but becomes verbally abusive with the nurse.
What is regression? Responding to stress by retreating to an earlier level of development and the comfort measures associated with that level of functioning; Revert back to childlike behaviors that are inappropriate
What is an example of regression? When a 2-year old is hospitalized for tonsillitis, he will only drink from a bottle. Although, his mother states he's been drinking from a cup for 6 months.
What is identification? An attempt to increase self-worth by acquiring certain attributes and characteristics of an individual one admires; copy cat intentional
What is an example of identification? A teenager who required lengthy rehab after an accident decides to become a physical therapist as a result of his experiences.
What is repression? INVOLUNTARY blocking unpleasant feelings and experiences from one's awareness; involuntary blocking out memory from a traumatic event
What is an example of repression? An adult struggles to trust others enough to form close relationships if they have repressed memories of being abused as a child.
What is intellectualization? An attempt to avoid expressing actual emotions associated with a stressful situation by using the intellectual processes of logic, reasoning, and analysis; a logical form of denial
What is an example of intellectualization? A woman's husband is being transferred to a city far away from their hometown. She hides her anxiety by explaining to her parents the advantages associated with the move.
What is sublimation? Channeling negative feelings into a positive action; may substitute negative impulses into some sort of acceptable form of expression
What is an example of sublimation? A mother whose son was killed by a drunk driver, positively uses her anger into being the president of the local chapter of mother's against drunk drivers
What is introjection? Integrating the beliefs and values of another individual into one's own ego structure; adopting the beliefs of others
What is an example of introjection? A father tells his daughter they have always voted for a certain party. The daughter accepts that it's the best way to go about voting.
What is suppression? The VOLUNTARY blocking of unpleasant feelings and experiences from one's awareness; Brought back to awareness when there is an opportunity to cope with them more effectively.
What is an example of suppression? Someone who has lied to a friend might feel guilty of doing so. They will conceal the feeling of guilt in order to get through their work day, but make a decision to talk to that friend as soon as they can.
What is isolation? Separating a thought or memory from the feeling, tone, or emotion associated with it.
What is an example of isolation? A young woman describes being attacked and raped without showing any emotion while doing so.
What is undoing? Trying to take back/make up for a behavior, thought, or impulse that is seen as hurftul to someone else. Tries to lessen feelings by being unusually kind, helpful, or complimentary
What is an example of undoing? A person who has unintentionally insulted a friend feels guilty for doing so, but rather than apologize for the comment, they give compliments instead.
What is projection? Attributing your own thoughts or feelings onto someone else who does not have those feelings; telling yourself repeatedly to have you believe someone else is the problem.
What is an example of projection? A man who is an alcoholic blames his wife for his addiction.
What is altruism? dealing with stress and anxiety by helping others; Satisfying internal needs through helping others.
What is an example of altruism? Someone that is recovering from substance abuse volunteers to help others in recovery as a way to deal with drug cravings
What type of defense mechanisms are sublimation and altruism? mature defense mechanisms
