Schizophrenia

What are positive symptoms of schizophrenia? they are the "psychotic symptoms" that people diagnosed experience that most individuals don't experience
examples of positive symptoms delusions, hallucinations, catatonic behavior, disorganized thoughts and behaviors, disorganized speech
what is a delusion of grandeur? ***NTK believes they're superior, i.e famous, has superhuman powers, etc
what is a delusion of persecution? believes someone is out to get them; bizzare ideas
what is a delusion of reference? belief that a neutral message is made especially for them
what is a delusion of control? belief that their thoughts/actions are controlled by others
what is a somatic delusion? false ideas about their body
what is a nihilistic delusion? false ideas about themselves, others, or objects - magical thinking
what are neologisms? made up words or phrases that only have meaning to them
what is preservation speech? repetition of words and statements; saying the same thing over and over
what is clang speech? meaningless use of rhyming words "I tied the rope soap the slope nope"
what are loose associations? rapidly shifting from topic to topic, with no connection between one thought and the next
what are negative symptoms? behaviors that we should have that have been "taken away"
examples of negative symptoms emotional flatness, inability to complete activities, lack of motivation, inability to experience pleasure, lack of content in speech
Avolition meaning lack of motivation
anhedonia meaning inability to feel pleasure
anergia lack of energy/ abnormal energy (pacing/ rocking)
alogia poverty of speech
cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia struggles with executive functioning, problem solving, memory, and organizing thoughts
anosognosia lack of insight/ awareness that there is anything wrong (not denial)
what is a common cognitive deficit associated with schizophrenia anosognosia
what is catatonic schizophrenia? unusual body positions, mute, withdrawn
disorganized schizophrenia incoherent thoughts or speech, but may not have delusions
paranoid schizophrenia suspicious, persecuted, ideas of grandeur
undifferentiated schizophrenia mixed; insufficiently formed w/o enough symptoms of a specific subtype
residual schizophrenia no longer has delusion or hallucinations, but not interested in life
what's the most common type of schizophrenia? undifferentiated
DSM-V diagnosis of schizophrenia 1. 2 or more characteristic symptoms 2. social/ occupational dysfunction 3. 1 mo of symptoms lasting at least 6 months 4. mood disorder exclusion 5. substance/ general medical condition exclusion
schizoaffective disorder the symptoms of schizophrenia along with symptoms of a mood disorder (most common depression)
