Geo- Ch 1 Vocab

Geography- Chapter 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Absolute Location The exact position of a place on the earth’s surface. Like an address or coordinates.
Hemisphere Half of a sphere or globe, as in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of Earth.
Relative Location Location in relation to other places. Like, “Oh! That’s across from Target!”
Place A particular space with physical and human meaning. Ex. Dallas, Gilmer, Texarkana, etc
Region Places united by specific characteristics.
Formal Region A region defined by a common characteristic such as production of a product or a boundary. Ex. The corn belt or Upshur County.
Functional Region A central point and the surrounding territory linked to it. Ex. Upshur Rural serves a certain territory. Or ETEX or even a TV or Radio Station.
Perceptual Region A region defined by popular feelings and images rather than by objective data. Ex. The South is considered “The Bible Belt” because of all the churches.
Ecosystem The complex community of interdependent living things in a given environment that rely on one another for survival.
Human-Environment Interaction The study of inter-relationship between people and their physical environment. This means how people adapt to or change their environment.
Physical Geography The study of Earth’s physical features like mountains, rivers, deserts, etc.
Human Geography The study of human activities and their relationship to the cultural and physical environments.
Cartography The science of mapmaking.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Computer tools for processing and organizing details and satellite images with other pieces of information. Uses satellites to better understand what people can do on earth’s surface.
Meteorology The study of weather and weather forecasting.
