Alimentary canal A long, muscular tube that begins at the mouth and includes the mouth (oral cavity), pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
Anus External opening of the anal canal, or rectum.
Colon The large intestine.
Digestive System Also know known as gastrointestinal system, is responsible for the physical and chemical breakdown of food so that it can be taken into the bloodstream and used by body cells and tissues.
Duodenum The first nine to ten inches of the small intestine.
Esophagus The muscular tube dorsal to (behind) the trachea.
Gallbladder A small, muscular sac located under the liver and attached to it by connective tissue.
Hard palate The body structure that forms the roof of the mouth and separates the mouth from the nasal cavities.
Ileaum The final 12 feet of the small intestine, and it connects with the large intestine of the cecum.
Jejunum Approximately eight feet in length and forms the middle section of the small intestine.
Large intestine The final section of the alimentary canal.
Liver The largest gland in the body and is an accessory organ in the digestive system.
Mouth Also called the buccal cavity, receive food as it enters the body.
Pancreas A glandular organ located behind the stomach.
Peristalsis To move the food in a forward direction.
Pharynx A tube that carries both air and food.
Rectum The final six inches of the large intestine and is a storage area of indegistables and wastes.
Salivary glands The parotid, sublingual, and submandibular, produce a liquid called saliva.
Small intestine a coiled section of the alimentary canal.
Soft palate Which separates the mouth from the nasopharynx.
Stomach An enlarged part of the alimentary canal.
Teeth Special structures in the mouth that physically break down food by chewing and grinding.
Tongue A muscular organ that contains special receptors, called tastes buds.
Vermiform appendix A small projection contained by the small intestine.
Villi Tiny projections from a surface; in the small intestine, projections that aid in the absorption of nutrients.
