Skin Lesions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Crust | Also known as a scab; a collection of hard, dried serum that forms as a barrier over a partial-thickness wound. |
Macule | Also known as a macula; a flat, discolored spot less then 1cm in length. Includes freckles and flat moles. |
Papule | A small, solid, and raised lesion that is less then 0.5cm in length and does not contain pus. Includes small pimples and bug bites. |
Wheal | Also known as a welt or hives; a small bump that itches. Often forms as a symptom of allergic reaction. |
Cyst | A closed sac/pouch that contains a soft or semisolid material. Can also refer to a sac or vesicle elsewhere on the body besides the skin. |
Pustule | Also known as a pimple; a small circumscribed elevation of the skin containing pus. |
Vesicle | A small blister less then 0.5cm in size. Contains a watery fluid. May be a result of poison ivy. |
Bulla | A large blister, usually more then 0.5cm in size. |
Fissure | A groove or crack-like break in the skin. Can be viewed in those with athletes foot. |
Ulcer | An open lesion of the skin/mucous membrane that results in tissue loss around the edges. |
