THE CELL AND CANCER

Terminology for The Cell and Cancer unit of pathophysiology

TermDefinition
Neoplasia "New Growth," tumor. Disorganized, uncoordinated, uncontrolled cell growth that is cancerous.
Benign "Abnormal" cells that remain localized. Well differentiated: Cells that resemble the healthy cells within the tissue of origin.
Malignant "Abnormal" cells that spread to other areas besides origin-- AKA metastasize. Poorly differentiated: cells appear different than the healthy cells within the tissue of origin.
Adenoma A benign tumor occurring in the glandular tissue or organ.
Lipomas A benign tumor derived from fat cells.
Hemangioma A benign collection of blood vessels in the skin or internal organ.
Desmoid Tumors Benign tumors that are highly invasive but do not metastasize.
Nevi Non-cancerous moles on the skin.
Myomas Tumors of the muscle.
Carcinoma Malignant epithelial cells-- cells that line inner and outer surfaces.
Adenocarcinoma Cancer of the glandular or ductal tissues.
Sarcoma Cells undergoing cancerous change at the mesenchymal origin, such as connective tissue, cartilage, and bone.
Leukemia Cancerous changes in leukocytes (white blood cells).
Lymphoma Cancerous lymphocytes are in the lymph nodes and lymphoid tissue.
