What is colonization? | Establishment of a site of reproduction for microbes on a person without actually causing them harm. |
What is an infection? | Growth or multiplication of a microbe in the body who’s purpose is to cause harm or damage to the host. |
How do Normal Flora Help us? | Normal flora can be helpful in maintaining homeostasis, regulate ph levels, help with digestion, protect the host from pathogens, and compete with invaders for nutrients. |
When and how do normal flora harm us? | If normal flora is displaced, grows too much, or the amount of them decrease due to antibiotics then they can become potentially harmful causing UTI’s, infections, bloodstream infections and more |
What is fecal bacteriotherapy? | Fecal bacteriotherapy is when a healthy donor’s stool is taken and placed into the sick recipients colon via rectal catheter to help redistribute healthy flora to the sick person to replace their damaged flora and help them recover. |
