Environment and Resources

Natural Resource A useful material found in the environment
Renewable Resource A resource that natural forces or people can replace in a relatively short time
Nonrenewable Resource A resource that cannot be replaced, or can be replaced only over millions of years
Fossil Fuel (definition) Formed over millions of years from the remains of plants an animals
Examples of Renewable Resources Water, plants, animals
Examples of Nonrenewable resources Minerals, metal ores, fossil fuels
Examples of Fossil Fuels Coal, natural gas, petroleum (crude oil)
Examples of renewable energy sources Wind and sunlight
Problem(s) with nonrenewable resources Once they are used they are gone; Earth will eventually run out of them
Industrialization The development of machine-powered production and manufacturing
Suburb A residential area on the edge of a city or large town
Deforestation The loss of forest cover in a region
Biodiversity The number of types of living things in a region or ecosystem
Pollution Waste that makes the air, soil, or water less clean
Spillover An effect on someone or something not involved in an activity that brought about that effect
