UTHSCSA N3802 Peri-operative Labs

QuestionAnswer
Complete Blood Count Definition the calculation of the cellular (formed elements) of blood. A major portion is the measure of the concentration of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets in the blood.
White Blood Cell (WBC) Definition The number of white blood cells in a volume of blood.
WBC Normal Range 5,000 – 10,000 cells/millimeter (mm)³
Red Blood Cell (RBC) Definition The number of red blood cells in a volume of blood.
RBC Normal Range for Men 4.7 – 6.1 million cells/millimeter (mm)³
RBC Normal Range for Women 4.2 – 5.4 million cells/millimeter (mm)³
Hemoglobin (Hgb) Definition The amount of hemoglobin in a volume of blood. Hemoglobin is the protein molecule within red blood cells that carries oxygen and gives blood its red color.
Hemoglobin (Hgb) Normal Range for Men 14 -18 grams/100 mL
Hemoglobin (Hgb) Normal Range for Women 12 – 16 grams/100 mL
Hematocrit (Hct) Definition The ratio of the volume of red cells to the volume of whole blood.
Hematocrit (Hct) Normal Range for Men 42% - 52%
Hematocrit (Hct) Normal Range for Women 37% - 47%
Platelet Count Definition The number of platelets in a volume of blood. Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting.
Platelet Count Normal Range 150,000 – 400,000 cells/cubic millimeter (mm)³
Prothrombin Time (PT) tests what? Reveals clotting ability of blood.
Prothrombin Time (PT) Normal Range 11 – 12.5 seconds
Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT) Normal Range 60 – 70 seconds
Activated Partial Prothrombplastic Time (APTT) tests what? Reveals clotting ability of blood.
Activated Partial Prothromboplastic Time (APTT) Normal Range 30 – 40 seconds
Why is APTT called Activated because activators have been added to the PTT Test. Reagents to shorten the normal clotting time. If the patient is on anticoagulant – you will expect the APTT to be 1.5 to 2.5 X the normal APTT
What should be done if the APTT less than 50 seconds when patient is on anticoagulant therapy? patient requires more Heparin due to not receiving the therapeutic dose.
What should be done if the APTT greater than 100 seconds when patient is on anticoagulant therapy? indicates that the patient is getting too much Heparin and the risk of serious spontaneous bleeding exists.
Serum Electrolytes Test is done to…? Reveal fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Sodium (Na) Normal Range 136 – 145 mEq/L
Potassium (KCL) Normal Range 3-5 – 5.0 mEq/L
Chloride (Cl) Normal Range 98 – 106 mEq/L
Bicarbonate (HCO3) Normal Range 21 – 28 mEq/L
Renal/Kidney Lab Studies include what tests? serum creatinine and Blood Urea Nitrogen
Serum Creatinine Tests what? Ability of kidneys to excrete creatinine, creatinine is a by-product of muscle metabolism.
Serum Creatinine Normal Range for Men 0.6 – 1.2 mg/100 mL
Serum Creatinine Normal Range for Women 0.5 – 1.1 mg/100 mL
Blood Urea Nitrogen tests what? Ability of kidneys to excrete urea and nitrogen indicates renal function.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) Normal Range 10 – 20 mg/100 mL
Coagulation Studies include what tests? Prothrombin Time (PT), Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT), and Activated Partial Prothrombplastic Time (APTT)
