folk religions comprises various forms and expressions of religion that are distinct from the official doctrines and practices of organized religion
universalizing religions attempt to be global and appeal to all people, wherever they may live in the world, not just one culture or location
ethnic religions appeal primarily to one ethnic or cultural group, or a specific region
congregation a local assembly of persons brought together for common religious worship
denomination unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body
branch a large and fundamental division within a religion
Christianity 3 branches Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodox
Buddhism 3 branches Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana
Islam 2 branches Sunni and Shiite
primal-indigenous religions hundreds of millions practice it in east and southeast Asia
animism elements of the natural world are animated or have discrete spirits and conscious life
relocation diffusion the spread of an idea through physical movement of people from one place to another
hierarchical diffusion the spread of an idea from persons or nodes of authority/power to other persons/places
contagious diffusion the rapid, widespread diffusion of a characteristic throughout the population
pilgrimage a journey for religious purposes to a place considered sacred
hajj Muslims are expected to make this pilgrimage to Makkah
utopian settlement a community built to reflect the ideals of a particular religious or social group
toponym the general name for any place or geographical entity
autonomous religions a religion without a central authority (ex. Islam and Hinduism)
hierarchical religions have well-defined geographical structure and organize territory into local administrative units (ex. Mormons and the Roman Catholic Church)
cosmogony a set of religious beliefs concerning the origin of the universe
solstice the time or date where the sun reaches its maximum or minimum declination, marked by the longest and shortest days of the year- has special significance in some ethnic religions
religious fundamentalism a literal interpretation and a strict and intense adherence to the basic principles of a religion
syncretic combines several traditions (ex. Confucianism and Taoism)
