Themes of Geography, Parts of a Map, Tools Geographers Use

TermDefinition
Latitude measures distance north and south of the Equator
Longitude measures distance east and west of the Prime Meridian
Equator the zero degree latitude line
Prime Meridian the zero degree longitude line
distortion the incorrect shapes or sizes of objects on a FLAT map
map projection a flat map or representation of the Earth
Globe a 3D model of the Earth with a smaller scale
map key shows what the symbols mean on the map
Title tells you the subject of the map
Locator Map shows a larger area that the main map is located within
scale bar shows the distance on map compared to real distance
Compass rose a diagram showing the cardinal directions (North, East, South, West)
physical map shows natural features such as elevation
political map shows areas that share a government (countries, states)
degrees units used to measure distance for latitude and longitude lines
Location a theme of Geography that tells where an area is on a map
Place a theme of Geography that describes the human and physical features of an area
Movement a theme of Geography for how people and ideas get around
Regions a theme of Geography about a shared feature of an area
