Coastal Processes

Year 8 Coastal processes for Term 3

TermDefinition
Wave A splash of water which is blown up by wind
What are waves caused by? By the wind dragging on the surface of the water
Tides The rise and fall of sea levels caused
What are tides caused by? By the gravitational forces of the moon, sun and of the rotation of the Earth
Low tide Lowest point of a sea point
High tide Highest point f a sea point
Crest Highest point of a wave
Trough Lowest point of a wave
Size of waves depend on what? Strength of wave How long wind blows
Longshore drift Movement of sediments in a zig-zag pattern up and down the shore
Swash Movement of water up the beach and away from the sea as a wave reaches the shore
Backwash Movement of water back towards the sea after a wave has broken
Constructive wave When swash is stronger than backwash and build up the beaches. Happens in the summer
Destructive wave When backwash is stronger than the swash and destroys beaches. Happens in the winter
