Term | Definition |

Wave | A splash of water which is blown up by wind |
What are waves caused by? | By the wind dragging on the surface of the water |
Tides | The rise and fall of sea levels caused |
What are tides caused by? | By the gravitational forces of the moon, sun and of the rotation of the Earth |
Low tide | Lowest point of a sea point |
High tide | Highest point f a sea point |
Crest | Highest point of a wave |
Trough | Lowest point of a wave |
Size of waves depend on what? | Strength of wave How long wind blows |
Longshore drift | Movement of sediments in a zig-zag pattern up and down the shore |
Swash | Movement of water up the beach and away from the sea as a wave reaches the shore |
Backwash | Movement of water back towards the sea after a wave has broken |
Constructive wave | When swash is stronger than backwash and build up the beaches. Happens in the summer |
Destructive wave | When backwash is stronger than the swash and destroys beaches. Happens in the winter |
