Formal Leadership Individuals occupying administrative or management positions, elected or appointed positions in professional nursing associations ex: CEO, chief nurse executive, VP for patient services and nurse manager
Informal Leadership Individuals who do not occupy a certain administrative or management position, but are perceived as leaders by their supervisors and/or peers. They share their expertise and are willing to be spokespersons for others within the organization.
Autocratic Leaders Leaders that make all decisions and concerned with tasks
Democratic Leaders Leaders that involve followers in the decision-making process by using participatory leadership
Laissez-Faire Leaders Leaders that do not interfere with employees and their work and stay at a distance
Transactional Leaders Leaders that focus on daily operations and rewards followers when they perform correctly
Transformational Leaders Leaders that use approaches to change individuals and inspire them to recognize their contributions
Authentic Leaders Leaders that are transparent and ethical and perceived to be open and optimistic
Shared Leadership Employees are empowered to distribute responsibilities within a group
Leadership An interactive process that provides needed guidance and direction; involves a leader, a follower, and a situation
Informatics -Uses nursing science, computer science, and information science to communicate and manage data, information, and knowledge -Improves documentation -Improves nursing workflow -Facilitates the analysis of clinical data -Health informatics
Technology The knowledge and use of tools, machines, materials, and processes to help solve human problems ex: hands free ID badge, trackers to find nurses, smart devices
Health Information Technology (HIT) The application of information processing involving both computer hardware and computer software that deals with the storage, retrieval, sharing, and use of healthcare data, information, and knowledge for communication and decision making
Health Informatics A discipline in which health data are stored, analyzed, and disseminated through the application of information and communication technology
Documentation -Electronic health record (EHR) -Key communication tool for all members of the health care team -Accuracy is best defenses for legal claims -5 important characteristics (factual, accurate, current, organized, complete)
Standardized Information Systems and Terminology -Standardized terminology within EHR critical for communicating care -Helps eliminate ambiguity -"Universal requirement for quality patient care, efficiency and cost containment"
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Creates a complex network of laws and regulations that address patient privacy and consent for the use of identifiable personal health information
Clinical Informatics -Application of information and communication technologies to the delivery of healthcare services -referred also referred to as applied clinical informatics and operational informatics -concerned with information use in health care by clinicians
Consumer Health Informatics -Form of health IT geared toward delivering better healthcare decisions based on consumer's perspective -Most challenging and rapidly expanding field in HIT -Supports consumers, patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision making
Public Health Informatics -Application of information, computer science, and technology to public health science to improve the health of populations -Leads to the development of new tools that enable the development and use of interoperable information systems
Social Power -Potential influence of one individual over another -Leader's style influences how they will use power -Formal leaders' power is derived from the position they hold -Transactional leaders use reward power -Authentic leaders use informational power
