Complications during labor and birth

| Anaphylactoid syndrome | an amniotic fluid embolism enters the woman's circulation and obstructs small blood vessels in her lungs. |
| Artificial rupture of membranes (AROM) | artificial rupture of membranes (amniotic sac) by using a sterile sharp instrument to puncture the amniotic sac and release the amniotic fluid for the purpose of inducing or augmenting labor. |
| Augmentation of labor | the stimulation of contractions after they have begun naturally. |
| Bishop score | used to assess the status of the cervix in determining its response to induction. |
| Cephalopelvic disproportion | inability of the fetus to pass through the mother's pelvis. |
| Chignon | a harmless area of circular edema on the infant's scalp when a vacuum extractor is used. |
| Chorioamnionitis | inflammation of the fetal membranes. |
| Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) | offers "natural" methods of stimulating labor that have been practiced for centuries but lack rigorous and controlled studies to prove effectiveness. (walking, nipple stimulation) |
| Dysfunctional labor | labor that does not progress (abnormal). |
| Dystocia | a term used to describe a difficult labor. |
| Fibronectin | a protein produced by the fetal membranes that can leak into vaginal secretions if uterine activity, infection, or cervical dilation of 2 cm or more occurs. |
| Hydramnios | overdistention of uterus. |
| Induction of labor | the intentional initiation of labor before it begins naturally. |
| Laminaria | a type of kelp or seaweed that can be used to help dilate the cervical canal to aid in delivery of the products of conception (neonate) |
| Macrosomia | a large fetus that weighs more than 4000 grams or 8.8 lbs. |
| Oligohydraminos | lower than normal amount of amniotic fluid. |
| Shoulder dystocia | occurs when the fetal head is born, but the shoulders become impacted above the mother's symphysis pubis. |
| Spontaneous rupture of membranes (SROM) | complication associated with an amniotomy. |
| Tocolytics | drugs that reduce uterine contractions. |
| Version | a method of changing the fetal presentation, usually from breech or oblique to cephalic. |
