Emergent Conditions and Disaster

TermDefinition
Abrasion a scraping away of the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin.
Amputation a partial or complete severing of a body part.
Anaphylactic shock a form of distributive shock, no loss of blood, excessive vasodilation occurs, bronchi constrict.
Anaphylaxis the response to a severe allergic reaction.
Anthrax a disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis.
Asphyxia insufficient oxygen intake.
Bioterrorism terrorism involving the release of toxic biological agents.
Botulism is caused by the most potent lethal toxin known, botulinum toxin.
Capillary refill this is checked on the nailbed to evaluate arterial circulation to an extremity.
Cardiac tamponade results when blood or fluid accumulates in the pericardial sac.
Cardiogenic shock signs and symptoms result from cardiac failure.
Distributive shock is caused by excessive dilation of the venules and arterioles.
Epinephrine adrenalin; hormone secreted by adrenal medulla in response to stimulation of sympathetic nervous system.
Flail chest condition of chest wall caused by two or more fractures on each affected rib, resulting in a segment of rib that is not attached on either end.
Gastric lavage used to empty stomach when the contents are irritating.
Hypovolemic shock signs and symptoms are caused by a decrease in the circulating blood volume.
Laceration open wounds resulting from snagging or tearing of tissue.
Obstructive shock is caused by a blockage of blood flow in the cardiovascular circuit outside the heart.
Plague is caused by the gram negative coccobacillus Yersinia pestis.
Shock a condition of progressively decreasing blood pressure. (ex. compensated, progressive, and irreversible)
Tachycardia rapid heart rate over 100 beats per minute.
Tachypnea breathing over 20 respirations per minute.
Tetanus is a disease caused the bacillus Clostridum tetani.
Triage sorting for the purpose of assigning priorities.
