Ch. 5 Complementary and Alternative Modalities

TermDefinition
Acupuncture treatment in which practitioners insert one or more needles along the meridians (pathways) where qi flow
Allopathic method of treating disease with remedies that produce effects different from those caused by the disease.
Alternative modality refers to a therapy used instead of a conventional modality.
Ayurvedic knowledge or science. (maintains that illness is the result of falling out of balance with nature.
Chiropractic treatment modality that uses manual adjustment of the vertebral column and extremities to remove interference with nerve function.
Complementary Modality refers to a therapy used in addition to a conventional modality.
Homeopathy "like cures like" meaning that tiny doses of a substance that create the symptoms of disease in a health person will relieve those symptoms in a sick person.
Naturopathy uses natural therapies such as nutrition, herbs, hydrotherapy (water based therapy) counseling, physical medicine, and homeopathy to treat disease, promote healing, and prevent illness.
Osteopathic related to the system of medicine emphasizing the interrelationship of the body's nerves, muscles, bones, and organs; treating the whole person thru diet, exercise etc.
