Oasis A wet fertile area in a desert that is fed by underground water
Fossil Water Underground water that is not being replaced by enough rainfall
Irrigation Supplying water to crops using a fresh source of water
Silt Fertile soil that is deposited on the banks of rivers
Surplus More than what is needed
Scarcity Not enough for all wants and needs
Middle East Middle East
Desert Sunny, dry, and barren climate zone that gets less than ten inches of rain a year
Steppe emi-arid region between deserts and wetter areas. They have short grasses and shrubs. 10-20 inches of rain a year.
Mediterranean Climate Climate zone with dry, sunny, warm summers and cooler and wetter winters. Found in coastal areas in the middle latitudes.
Nomads People groups who often move from place to place.
Agriculture The practice of farming for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.
Subsistence Agriculture Growing just enough food to feed yourself and your family.
Arid Very dry. Think the desert.
Humid An area that gets a lot of rain.
Semi-Arid A mostly dry region that gets more rain than a desert (think steppe).
Tropical In social studies this is used to mean an area that has warm temperatures.
Temperate An area with temperatures that change from cool and cold to warm and sometimes hot, but generally in the middle of the two extremes.
