Constipation Abnormally delayed or infre passage of dry hardened feces
Defecation Elimination of waste and undigested food from the rectum
Diarrhea Frequent movement of the bowels; increased number of stools per day; often liquid or semiliquid
Distention State of being stretched out or filled overfull
Dysuria Pain or burning upon urination
Enema Introduction of fluid into the rectum and colon
Fecal impaction Collection of hardened feces in rectum or colon
Flatus Gas in the digest tract
Hematuria Blood in the urine
Hemmorrhoids Dilated blood vessels in the anal area
Incontinence Inability to retain urine or feces due to loss of sphincter control
Osmosis Passage of solvent through semi-permeable membrane from greater to lesser concentrations
Retention Failure to expel urine from the bladder
Suppository Semi-solid medicated substances for introduction into the rectum, vagina, urethra
Urgency Immediate need to urinate
Enuresis Repeated involuntary urination in children who have reached ago for capability of voluntary control
Bulk Forming (Laxative) Action: least irritating, high fiber and it basically stimulates the intestinal wall to stretch and get rid of what’s there. Ex. Metamucil
Emollient or Welling (Laxative) Stool softener; short term therapy to relieve straining and it works by pulling water/ fat and penetrate the stool. Can be used after pregnancy, hemorrhoids. Ex: docusate, sodium, calcium, potassium
Osmotic (Laxative) Saline based; it basically pulls fluid into the bowels to soften the stool. Not Longterm and only used for Acute emptying of the bowel. Ex: Milk of Magnesia
