Oral Medications

Objectives

Define medication. A medication is a chemical substance that changes body function.
Name seven components of a drug order. A complete drug order contains the date and time of the order; the name of the client; the name of the drug, its dose, route, and frequency of administration, and the name of the prescriber.
Explain the difference between trade and generic drug names. trade- is the name by which a pharmaceutical company identifies its drug. A drug's generic name is a chemical name that is not exclusively used by any drug company.
Name four common routes for medication administration. oral, topical, inhalant, and parenteral.
Describe the oral route and two general forms of medication administered this way. the oral route is used to administer drugs intended for absorption in the GI tract. (scored tablets and enteric-coated tablets)
Explain the purpose of a medication record. a MAR is used to document and ensure timely and safe drug administration.
Name three ways that drugs are supplied. individual supply, a supply of unit dose packets, and a stock supply.
Discuss two nursing responsibilities that apply to the administration of opioids. keeping the supply of controlled substances securely locked and maintaining an accurate record of their use. Nurses count controlled substances regularly.
Name the five "rights" of medication administration. involve making sure that the right client receives the right drug, in the right dose, at the right time, and the right route.
Give the formula for calculating a drug dose. convert drug doses to the same system of measurement and the same measurement within that system, you would divide the desired dose by the dose on hand and then multiplying it by the quantity of the supply.
Discuss at least one guideline that applies to the safe administration of medications. the nurse checks drug labels 3 times before administering the medication.
Discuss one point to stress when teaching clients about taking medications. bring a bag with all their medications or a written list to inform each health care provider of the prescription and nonprescription drugs currently being taken.
Explain the circumstances involved in giving oral medications by an enteral tube and one commonly associated problem. maintaining the tube's patency. Medications in liquid form are preferred. If unavailable, solid meds are crushed and mixed with liquid. Fluid is given before & after meds. The enteral tube is clamped for 30 mins if suction is being used.
Describe three appropriate actions in the event of a medication error. report it to the prescriber and supervisor, assess the client for ill effects, and document the situation on an incident report or accident sheet.
