Define terminal illness. an illness from which recovery is beyond reasonable expectation.
Name the five stages of dying. denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
Describe two methods by which nurses can promote the acceptance of death in dying clients. providing emotional support to dying clients and helping them to arrange their care.
Define respite care. provides temporary relief for caregivers of dying love ones.
Discuss the philosophy of hospice care. involves helping clients to live their final days in comfort, with dignity, and in a caring environment.
List at least five aspects of terminal care. hydration, nourishment, elimination, hygiene, positioning and comfort.
Name at least five signs of multiple organ failure. hypotension, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, cold and mottled skin, and decreased urinary output.
Explain why a discussion of organ donation must take place as expeditiously as possible following a client's death. To ensure a successful transplant.
Name three components of postmortem care. cleaning the body, ensuring proper identification, and releasing the body to mortuary personnel.
Explain the difference between a clinical autopsy and a forensic autopsy and the manner in which postmortem care is implemented. clinical- performed to determine the cause of a person's death and requires permission from deceased's next of kin. forensic- performed by a med examiner to see if a crime was committed in cases following suspicious or unnatural death.
Discuss the benefit of grieving and one sign that grief is being resolved. although grieving is painful, it promotes resolution of the loss. one sign is that he or she can talk about the deceased person without becoming emotionally overwhelmed.
