Perioperative Care

Define perioperative care. Perioperative care refers to the nursing care that clients receive before, during, and after surgery.
Identify the three phases of perioperative care. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods.
Differentiate inpatient from outpatient surgery. Inatient surgery is performed on clients who remain in the hospital at least overnight. Outpatient surgery is performed on clients who return home the same day.
List at least four advantages of laser surgery. Cost effective, requires smaller incisions, results in minimal blood loss, and produces less pain.
Discuss two methods for donating blood before surgery. Some clients choose to donate their own blood before surgery or ask specific donors to do so.
Identify four major activities that nurses perform for all clients immediately before surgery. Conducting a nursing assessment, providing preoperative teaching, preparing the skin, and completing the surgical checklist.
Name three topics to address in preoperative teaching. Deep breathing, coughing and leg exercises.
Explain the purpose of antiembolism stockings. Surgical clients wear antiembolism stockings to prevent thrombi and emboli.
Name two recommended methods for removing hair when preparing the skin for surgery. When hair removal is required, electric clippers, depilatory agents, or a safety razor may be used depending on the agency policy and medical orders.
List at least five items that are verified on the preoperative checklist. History and physical, the name of the procedure matches the one scheduled, the surgical consent form has been signed and witnessed, the client has their id bracelet, and all labs have been returned and reported if abnormal.
Discuss the purpose and information required during a pre-surgical time-out according to the Joint Commission's Universal Protocol. The time-out period is preformed prior to all surgical procedures to prevent wrong site, wrong side, wrong procedure, or wrong person surgery.
Name three areas of the surgical department used during the intraoperative period. The receiving room, the operating room, and the surgical waiting room.
Describe the focus of nursing care during the immediate postoperative period. Nurses focus on monitoring the client for complications, preparing the clients room, and continuing assessments to detect developing problems.
Give four examples of common postoperative complications. Airway obstruction, wound infection, hemorhage and shock
Discuss the purpose of a pneumatic compression device. Promote circulation of venous blood and relocation of excess fluid into the lymphatic vessels.
Describe at least two items of information included in discharge instructions for postsurgical clients. How to care for the incision site, signs of complications to report, and how to self administer prescription drugs
Discuss at least two ways in which the surgical care of older adults differs from that of other age groups. Period of fluid restriction before surgery may be shortened for older adults to reduce risk for dehydration and hypotension. Cardiac status must be monitored carefully b/c they may not be able to circulate or eliminate IV fluids given @ standard rates.
