What are 8 factors that affect normal urinary elimination? Age, socio-cultural/personal habits, psychological, muscle tone, volume status, surgical procedures, medications and diagnostic procedures.
The bladder normally holds a maximum of how much urine? 600 ml
Within a 24 hour day, how much can an individual void? Between a total of 1,500 to 1,600 ml per day.
In aging, what anatomical changes take place in the kidneys? 20% to 30% decrease in size and weight between the ages of 30 to 90 years of age.
After the 70th year of life, has happened to the glomeruli in the kidneys? About 30% of the glomeruli have lost their function.
Urinary incontinence is higher among what demographic? Menopausal women who use hormone replacement therapy.
What occurs to men as they age that's related to urinary elimination? Men's prostate enlarges as they age.
Prostate enlargement causes what? Hesitancy, retention, slowing of the urinary stream and bladder infections among aging men.
What two things are important considerations regarding socio-cultural/personal habits of urine elimination? Privacy and appropriateness of time & place.
If a patient prefers privacy, what four things can a nurse do? Prevent interruption, close curtains if using bedpan/bedside commode, remain nearby for patient assistance and/or place nurse call-button for accessible reach.
When do patients usually have a need to void? Upon first awakening.
Women prefer to do what when voiding? Prefer to sit on a toilet when voiding.
Men prefer to do what when voiding? Prefer to stand when voiding.
With regards to rituals/cultures, what should nurses keep in mind about a patient's gender? Some cultures determine whether it is appropriate for a male to care for the urinary needs of a female patient.
Regarding a patient's psychology, what two things may cause a sense of urgency and increased frequency of urination? Anxiety and emotional stress.
What is the inability to urinate in public restrooms or in situations when others may be aware of the person voiding? Paruresis
What are three other names for paruresis? Shy bladder syndrome, bashful bladder and bladder shyness.
Why is paruresis not a physical condition? Because nothing is wrong with the individual's urinary tract.
What effect does anxiety about urinating have on urine elimination? It over-stimulates the individual's nervous system and clamps the sphincter shut.
What are six methods for treating paruresis? Using the stall rather than urinals for men, flushing the toilet first to help start the stream, distracting thoughts, psychotherapy, hypnosis and self-catheterization.
Regarding muscle tone, what four events can cause poor control of voiding? Muscle wasting caused by immobility, stretching of muscles during childbirth, menopausal muscle atrophy and traumatic damage to the muscle.
