Antimalarial,Antirheumatic: Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine): Uses in Lupus Erythematosus Decreases inflammation, Slows disease processes, *Eye exams q 3-6 months needed
Antiprotozoal: Pentamidine (Pentam 300)Used in HIV/AIDS patients Prevention of Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia in AIDS or HIV-positive patients who have had PCP or who have a peripheral CD4 lymphocyte count of ≤200/mm3.
Anticholinesterase: Edrophonium (Tensilon), Pyridostigmine (Mestinon), Neostigmine (Prostigmine) Used to determine if Pt is in a Myasthenic crisis Cholinergic crisis If Patient is positive for Myasthenia. Anticholinesterases "Tensilon" will improve muscle tone/Strength that will last for 4-5 mins. This allows Pt to perform ADL's without assistance. Teach Pt to take 30 mins before meals & carry medical ID card.
Antidote for Edrophonium (Tension) and Anticholinesterases is: Atropine
Atropine: Uses in Myasthenia Graves Anticholinergic, Antidysrhythmic: Dries up secreations, Increases cardiac output, Bronchodilator, Antispasmodic with GU & Bilary surgery.
Oxybutynin (Ditropan) Used in Multiple Sclerosis Patients Antispasmodics,Anticholinergics: Used to decrease bladder spasms, control urge incontinence & frequency.
Anti-multiple sclerosis agents, immune modifiers: Interferon-Beta: Decreases symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
Gabapentin (Neurontin): Used in Multiple Sclerosis & Trigeminal Neuralgia Anticonvulsant, Mood Stablilizer: Used to treat seizures, Bipolar, Decreased post-herpetic pain.
Carbamazepine (Tegretol): Used in Trigeminal Neuralgia Anticonvulsant, Mood Stablilizer: Used to treat seizures, Decrease trigeminal pain, Paresthesia and Bipolar disorder
Pheytoin (Dilantin): Used in Trigeminal Neuralgia (Therapeutic level: 10-20 mcg/mL) Antiarrhythmics (group IB), Anticonvulsants: Used to treat seizures, dysrhythmias. Teach Pt take this med decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills, has a teratogenic effect during pregnancy and to perform good oral hygiene.
Benzodiazepines: Baclofen (Lioresal), Dantrolene (Dantrium),Diazepam (Valium) Used in Trigeminal Neuralgia & Cerebral Palsy Anticonvulsant,Sedative/hypnotic,Muscle relaxant, Antianxiety,: Give to reduce muscle spasmsPharmacologic: benzodiazepines
Levodopa (carbidopa/levodopa, Sinemet)Used in Parkinson's Disease Antiparkinson,Dopamine agonists: Used for relief of tremors & rigid. It is converted to dopamine in the CNS, where it acts like a neurotransmitter. Teach Pt to avoid MAO Inhibitors because of risk of hypertensive crisis.
Bomocriptine (Parlodel), Pergolide (Permax) Used in Parkinson's Disease Antiparkinson agents, Dopamine agonists: Used for relief of tremors & rigid. Decreases growth hormone levels in acromegaly.
Trihexyphenidyl (Artane), Benztropine (Cogentin) Used in Parkinson's Disease Antiparkinson, Anticholinergics: Decreases involuntary movements, Dries up secretions, Decreases sweating and salivation. S/E: Urinary retention
Riluzole (Rilutek): Used in Parkinson's Disease Anticonvulasant: It extends the patients life by a few months.
