YOUNG ADULT- Late teens-mid to late 30's.During this phase the individual moves away from the family and marries or remains single.
Young Adults are active and adapt yo new experiences and newly acquired independence
Older adults don't want to change
Young adults have reached physical maturity,have achieved highest level of cognitive ability according to: Piaget,and are expected to exhibit a high degree of psychosocial maturity.
Many young adults recognize they are continuously: in the process of becoming more mature in their behavior.
Physical Developement-Young adults: usually complete their physical growth by age 20,they are at their peak in health.
HEALTH PROMOTION Health teaching and health counseling our often directed at assisting patients in improving their health habits.
Young Adults are generally active and have: no major health problems
However,their fast passed lifestyle puts them at risk for: illness or disabilities during the middle or older adults years.

Not scheduling routine screenings puts the patient at risk for severe: illness because of failed early detection
Encourage patients to perform monthly: breast self-examination (BSE),testicular self-exam(TSE) and regular genital self-exam.
Inform women of the benefit and suggested schedule for routine: mammography,and make sure men know about the need for prostate gland examination.
ACUTE CARE- Many young adults do not experience hospitalization,but when they do it is often life threatening because it interferes with their employment and fulfillment of family responsibilities.
Middle-Aged Adult Age 40-65 and is often described as the period when one has both grown children and older adult parents.
Most middle Aged adults have experienced personal and career achievements,along with socioeconomical stability.
Using leisure time in satisfying and creative ways is a challenge that if met satisfactorily ,will enable middle-aged adults to prepare for retirement.
Climacteric Is a term used to described the decline to reproductive capacity and accompanying changes brought abouy by the decrease in sexual hormones.(this affects men and women differently.)
Men Begin to experience decreased fertility but they are able to father children
Menopause When a women stops ovulating and menstruating,occurs only when 12 months have passed since the last menstrual flow.The womens ability to bear children comes to an end.
Although middle-aged adults sometimes perform more slowly and are not as adept at solving new or unusual problems, the ability to solve practical problems based on experience peaks at midlife because of the ability to interrogative thinking.
HEALTH PROMOTION-Because middle-agers: experience physiological changes and face certain health realities,their perception of health and health behaviors are often important factors in maintaining health
Middle Aged Adults-Are more prone to stress related illnesses such as: heart attacks,hypertension,migraine headaches,backache,arthritis,cancer and autoimmune disease.
The leading cause of death in persons between the ages of 45 and 64 years are: heart disease,cancer(primary lung,breast, and colorectal stroke,accidental injuries, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Females risk for coronary heart disease increases with: middle age, particularly after menopause
One in nine women from age 45-64 have: some form of heart disease or stroke
One in six men has heart or blood vessil disease
Acute Care-Middle-Agers hold the same family and occupational concerns regarding hospitalization as do young adults
There is sometimes less stress because of the security of: employment or because the children who are still at home are usually old enough to care for themselves.
Older Adult Most older adults are physically active,intelligent and socially engaged
Extended life spans: allow many older adults to enjoy their retirement by pursuing interest that they previously had little time for.
Older Adulthood traditionally begin after retirement,but the time when people retire varies greatly. Some people retire at 50 and others work into their 80's and 90's.
It is not unusual for those who write about older adults to divide them into the: YOUNG OLD" who are vital,vigorous,and active and the "old old," who are frail and infirm.

Geriatrics Is the branch of health care dealing with the physiology and psychology of aging and with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting older adults.
Gerontology Is the study of all aspects of the aging process and its consequences.
Nursing Care of the older adult- You cant base everything on the fact that the person is old.You have to go by the individual because a lot of old people are in good health because of taking care of themselves.
Cognitive Development Older adults often remain alert and highly perceptive until their death.
The misconception that older adults always have cognitive impairment and suffer from: memory loss and confusion persist
Three common conditions affect cognition in older adults: Delirium,dementia, and depression.
Delirium Acute confusion state-It is potentially reversible cognitive impairment that is often due to physiological causes
Causes of Delirium: electrolyte imbalance,hypoglycemia,infection and hemmorahge and sometimes very slight body temperature alterations in older adults.
Dementia Generalized Impairment of intelectual functioning,which interferes with social and occupational functioning.Cognitive function Impairment leads to a decline in the ability to perform basic and instrumental activities of daily activities.
Dementia differs from delirium in that: it is a gradual,progressive,irreversible dysfunction
Alzheimer's Disease Is the most common form of dementia
Alzheimer's Disease Is a progressive loss of memory(amnesia),loss of ability to recognize objects(agnosia,loss of ability to perform familiar task(apraxia) and loss of language skills.(aphasia)
Depression among older adults: is increasing and reversible.
Health Promotions of older adult: The possibility of an individual being reasonably healthy and fit later in life often depends on the persons lifestyle.
Most older adults are in good health; however: chronic medical conditions increase dramatically with age.
Coronary Artery Disease(CAD): Remains the leading cause of death in those 65 years of age and older.
As a group,adults over 65 are: the greatest users of prescription drugs.
Many drugs interact with one another, potentiating or negating the affect of another drug
Polypharmacy The prescription,use,or administration of more medications than are indicated clinically is a common problem of older adults
Nursing Assessment of individuals across the life span requires you to: be familiar with the physiological,cognitive, and psychosocial changes that occur during each stage of developement and the health concerns for each age-group.
Patient Expectation You need to know what the patient expects.
Nursing Diagnosis Impaired Adjustment,Caregiver Role Strain, decisional Conflict
