CAM Definitions

Definitions located in the Complementary & Alternative Healing Modalities

Western Medicine An approach to health that focuses on the use of science in the diagnosis and treatment of health problems
Eastern Medicine An approach that places greater emphasis on prevention and natural healing
Complementary Medicine Use of CAM + conventional medicine
Alternative Medicine Use of CAM in place of conventional medicine
Integrative Medicine Combines treatments from conventional medicine & CAM for which high-quality evidence of safety & effectiveness exists.
Spirituality The dimension that involves relationship with oneself, with others, and with a higher power.
Energy The force that integrates the body, mind, and spirit, it is that which connects everything
Ayurveda Indian system of medicine of medicine where illness is viewed as a state of imbalance among the body's system
Curanderismo A cultural healing tradition found in Latin America that uses Western medicine beliefs, treatments, and practices at three levels of care: material level, spiritual level, and mental level
Aromatherapy The therapeutic use of essential oils of plants in which the odor or fragrance plays an important part
Homeopathy A self-healing system, thus treatment is with highly diluted amounts of substances that at a higher concentration would produce the same symptoms as the disease
Naturopathic Medicine Practice that focuses on nutrition, herbs, homeopathy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, counseling, and minor medical surgical interventions
Reflexology Form of acupressure most commonly performed on the feet but the hands or ears may also be manipulated
Acupuncture A form of healing in which the therapists applies needles to stimulate specific sites of the body
Acupressure A technique that uses the fingers to apply pressure to specific points along meridians throughout the body
Hand-mediated biofield therapies Use of hands to alter the biofield, or energy field, are therapeutic touch (TT), healing touch, and Reiki
Yoga A type of meditation that is a system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being
Meditation A process that anyone can use to calm themselves, cope with stress, and , for those with spiritual inclinations, feel as one with God or the universe
Hypnotherapy Application of hypnosis in a wide variety of medical and psychological disorders
Imagery Two-way communication between the conscious and unconscious mind and involves the whole body and all of its senses.
Guided Imagery A state of focused attention, much like hypnosis, that encourages changes in attitudes, behavior, and physiological reactions
Biofeedback Method by which a person can learn to control certain physiological responses of the body
Pilates Method of physical movement and exercise designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body, in particular the core or center including the abd region
Faith Refers to our beliefs & expectations about life, ourselves, and others
Prayer A form of communication and fellowship with the Deity or Creator
T'ai chi Discipline that combines physical fitness, meditation, and self-defense
Qi gong Chinese discipline consisting of breathing and mental exercises combined with body movements.
Native American Healing Involves spirituality and medicine often involves a designated healer
Music Therapy Quiet, soothing, music without words is often used to induce relaxation
Horticultural therapy Gardening or a healing garden & an adjunct to occupational and physical therapy; stimulates five senses and can help decrease isolation if used in group therapy
Animal-assisted therapy Use of specifically selected animals as a treatment modality in health and human service settings. Successful intervention for people with a variety of physical or psychological conditions
Detoxification Belief that physical impurities and toxins must be cleared from the body to achieve better health
